Zildjian Flanged/Bop Hats?

Loading...

Hey all, I have a pair of 14" PAPER THIN 60's Zildjian hi hats. The bottom cymbal is slightly curved like a china would be. I did some research and found that they are POSSIBLY flange or bop hats? I just know how to date the era of Zildjians and whether they are K's or not. That's about it. I'd love to get some info on these as I am looking to sell them and don't know what a fair price would be. Thanks!

They didn't make flanged hats in the 60's. Those are 50's late.

They were advertised in the 1964 Rogers catalog with this advice:"We recommend a regular Hi-Hat cymbal on top... Two Flange cymbals together sound too "mushy". ". Fourteens were $33.00 each back then!

Never play it the same way once.

Which was no doubt based on Zildjian wanting to sell their remaining inventory.

I have never seen any flanged hi-hats made in the 1960's, and I challenge anyone to produce evidence to the contrary. The above examples certainly do not.

When the 60's rolled around, these flanged hats went out of favor and instead the "new beats" started to become popular.

By that time the flanged models were going out of style. So I guess that you might just say that they had become "old hat".

Get it?

And who knows how old the print for that '64 catalog was?

So from what I've found they are rare. But rare doesn't necessarily = $$. There was a pair of 15's that went for $850 but 15's usually bring a bit more $$. Thoughts?

That sounds pretty crazy...

I can see 14"s going for maybe $250-300-350...but nowhere near $850....

When I bought my first (Cleveland) Rogers kit in circa 1972-73,it came with a pair of 14" BF hats...so they must have been old already....

I know I have had at least 1, if not 2 pairs since.....

Wish I would have kept all of them now!

yeah the 14's aren't going for $850, but the 15's went for that and I was pretty shocked. Well, to ebay they go!

SEEING AS MY ROGERS KIT WAS CIRCA 1964-65,AND THEY SHOWED THEM IN THE ROGERS CATALOG AT THAT TIME...MAYBE HE BOUGHT THEM NEW THEN...?

They were not all new and shiny though..so either he played the heck out of them,or they were used when he got them...

Sorry for shouting...didn't know CAPS lock was on.....
