Slingerland ID help needed.

I just purchased a 16 x 16 floor tom.It is in very rough shape date is 1958 .No badge push button leg mounts.Stamped m. This tom had alot of paint inside and out that was added after the fact.It also had asparkle added to the exterior.

I started to stip this off and noticed the outter ply is maple.This means that it was originally painted ...right?(side note instead of roughing it with sand paper to make the paint adhere, someone used a knife and scratched the bejesus out of it , otherwise it would be natural clear. I only noticed 2 ducos in the vintage guide.Is that the only paint options they had back then or were there other custom options? I plan on wrapping this tom , with champaigne sparkle to get two down set up. By the way it does sport one cob hoop, and slingerlands lugs.

I was just curious .Also this drum appears to have had a wrap riveted on it at one time. Would this be a possibility from them.It looks like it has hide glue on the interior where the rivet holes were.

Thanks

M = Painted

Paint Options for that year. Silver/Blue or Black/Gold

If you put a badge on, I think that it shold be a Black/Gold Chicago badge.

There is something about outside diameter on painted shells vs wrapped shells from the factory. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I can help on this one.

I doubt the rivits are factory, I have not seen that in my research, but I could be wrong.

[COLOR="DarkRed"]What he said.

Yes, good point...just check that it fits a contemporary head with enough slack in it. Sometimes, painted shells and pre-60's shells can be a bit wider in diameter than current shells. I have made a few mistakes of wrapping a painted shell only to later discover I need a rubber mallet to put the heads on it...and a crowbar to take 'em off.

Black Chicago badge...easily found on eBay if you wanna pony up about $20 for one...

You wanna sand down the exterior of the shell very well. Start with 80 grade and work to at least 120 grade....use a pad sander. Fill any dips and places where the outer ply got ripped off with either bondo or plastic wood, and sand smooth. It'll be a bit of a labor of love....don't rush it.

Never seen rivets on Slingys, either.

Does the badge have the complete cursive S? If so, I want it. I'm going to add a floor tom to my 58's.

Two things here...

1. If you re-wrap an "M" or "W" shell, you may not be able to get heads on the drum. Those shells were usually exactly 16" (or whatever the drum was supposed to be) so a wrap would make it oversized. The wrapped shells were slightly under the designated size...

2. If your drum is a 1958, it would never have had a badge, so adding one wouldn't be authentic. (Of course, since it's a "project" drum, you may as well do whatever you feel looks cool...)

thanks guys.

I wasn't planning on installing a badge on this one its just for a two down floor set I would like to have. Good thing you keyed me on to the wrap thing , and the heads not fitting.I will have to try it with some spare material first and see if it works.Mobey the modern vintage style heads would cure this.I would hate to sand it down at all. Mabey I could get a reasonable painted finish to match champagne sparkle.Anyone know a supplier of those copper and silver flakes? What would the base color be gold? then with clear to set the sparkles.

Thanks

[COLOR="DarkRed"]You have a tough one there. Champagne sparkle wrap (new) is actually one of the thinner Sparkle wraps there is, because it has no white or black backing layer like almost all other sparkles.

But a spray-applied sparkle finish...it's tre expen$ive...and usually it is sevreal layers including a finish clearcoat...so it's not thin either.

I'd lean towards the wrap and finding heads that work. American Vintage...maybe.

Fiberskyns...maybe (they look HECKA cool on Champagne sparkle drums, btw).

Ludwig brand white coateds...maybe.

I would buy the head first, put it on the shell and see which one gives you the most play.
