Black film - Zildjian Cream - Pledge

Loading...

This has probably already been mentioned on here before - but I wanted to help make sure everyone knew about it.

Zildjian's polishing cream is extremely effective in achieve a blinding flashing gleam of shine! However, the complaint with Zildjian's Polishing Cream (that comes in a tube) has always been the black film it leaves that many times is difficult to eliminate - leaving your cymbal with a tint of black, especially in the grooves.

I have read on here that Pledge is good to use as a very mild cleaner, but mostly as a protectant. Well, when I went to apply my Pledge after using the Zildjian Cream - I was a bit surprised to notice that alot of of the black comes off when wiping up the Pledge - both applying it and buffing. This even came after the initial dry buffing when you think you are getting it all off.

So I suppose it can be concluded that Pledge both helps clean off the black and also leaves a protecting layer of (wax/polish) as is evident in how the cymbal feels when complete (a bit slippery - but similar to the protecting layer you can feel on your Paistes after the Blue bottle protecting polish is applied.)

Here is how I do it:

1) Apply the Pledge - get good even spread/coverage with a paper towel.

2) Wait - let it dry for a song or two

3) Buff it out *with a microfibre cloth* to a beatiful polish gleam!

You will get the black on there both on the paper towel and the buffing towel.

Time will tell if this will effectively prevent tarnishing. I believe it will. In fact, I have been thinking about applying several coats of Pledge.....any thoughts?

Do share your experiences please.

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Any car wax such as NuFinish, will leave that black stuff you're talking about. For extremely dirty cymbals, I always use Barkeeper's Friend. It's extremely cheap compared to the Zildjian stuff and if used properly doesn't scratch your cymbals at all. They even have it in liquid now if you're concerned about applying the powder. For just mild discoloration, I recommend the Sabian cleaner. Sprays on nice and if you don't scrub so much, it won't take your ink off.

Yeah - I discovered BKF too - and love the stuff! At the same time, it is very difficult to beat the shine you get with Zildjian's cream. So, I do both - then Pledge.

B8/Paiste - I use purely their products, though I have used ketchup on a Zildjian Scimitar Bronze, which had a brilliant finish (and I believe was B8). Then, some cymbals' look came out very uneven - so I stopped using ketchup altogether. I understand that BKF on Paiste/B8 is a NO NO.

Slowly figuring these things out.

Which Pledge product are you using?

I'm not even using Pledge (WHAT???!!!!)

It is imitation Pledge. Like the stuff you find at the dollar store. My particular can is

"Power House Furniture Polish Orange"

"Cleans, Restores, and Conditions Wood"

but it is essentially the same thing.

On the back of the can it states

"Gently cleans away dust, dirt, fingerprints and smudges from wooden surfaces. It shines and protects wood against ordinary wear, water spills and stains"

It cleans, protects.....
