Radio King set restoration (beginning)

I just brought this home and can't wait to start cleaning it up. It mainly needs to get polished up and some minor rust removed and it should be in pretty good shape.Bass drum hoops will need the most work.

Any advice will be appreciated as well.

Man, how old are those? They look nice. I just found this stuff called "Nevr Dull" that works real well at cleaning metal. Picks rust right off there; Just be sure to wipe it down well after running it over with the Nevr Dull and it'll look awesome.

Late 1930's from what the original owner could remember, he's in his mid 80's, plus the badges are from that era.

Anyone else have an opinion on nevr-dull?

Sharp looking kit, nice.

I've had good results with Nevr Dull, but yes, you have to polish/buff well afterwards, the next day too, with some stuff.

Nice kit...

Are all of the lugs chrome, or mix and match with nickle?/

I have those "streamlined" snare lugs if you're interested in replacing those later Soundking ones...

Venting: I found an almost perfect match 14" RK tom on ebay. The problem is they want $500 bucks for it and won't come down on the price almost at all. It's even missing the mount! $300 seems a more than fare price to me based on what I have seen other RK toms go for. There I'm done.

Awesome kit...I wonder if the snare is actually not original to the kit, or if the original beavertails were just replaced. I would have expected those lugs to be beavertails based on the rest of the hardware on that snare.

Basically...you have to take the entire kit apart; take off all hardware...lugs, t-rods, hoops, mufflers.

Check the internal springs of the lug casings; if they are rusted or full of coccoons, clean 'em up.

Small rusted elements: 2 days soaking, submerged in Dawn dishwashing liquid; followed by a soft-toothbrush scrub under warm water, a thorough dry (I use a hairdryer) and then a rubbing in some WD40 applied on a cloth.

Wraps: clean up with a mild cleaner. Method brand wipes (like wet wipes but not environmentally toxic and not containing bleach) is my number one choice for this. They are easy to use, don't get too wet, and they take off dirt well. After a thorough cleaning, use a car vinyl upholstery spray on them. This will return some of the shine.

Lugs and hoops: NeverDull, then follow the initial wipe-down with another wipe down using paper towels the next day, since the initial application leaves a film which should be removed later.

Question then is, what do you do with what I assume is that big hole in the bass drum ?

He won't sell the tom for $500. Although, I would argue that your kit doesn't need the other tom; it's a beauty of a 4 piece. So after the auction expires, contact the seller and try to talk him into a relist with a more realistic pricetag.

Congratulations ! Very nice !!!Cool1

BTW, I have some old RK bass drum clip-on spurs, nickel, if you need those for the bass. PM me.

I'm not sure about the snare. It does have the same cloud badge as the bass. The old gentleman said he bought it as a kit in late 1939 or 1940, he couldn't remember.

The bass drum doesn't have a whole in it other that the grommet. Optical illusion from the felt strip?

I have some spurs and other hardware that came with it plus a really cool looking epic bass pedal.

Thanks for all the info though, I get started this weekend on it.

That makes me oh, so very happy to hear. I suspected the old "duct tape over hacked-in mounthole" there. Glad to hear it's not the case.

whew !
