Big WFL Restoration

I picked these up this morning and I'm psyched to dig in. Attached are some pics of what I gather are late 30's to early 40's WFL's with a late 40's snare. 9x13 tacked bottom calf tom and 14x16 tacked bottom calf floor tom with maple interiors, 14x28 kick and 7x14 snare. Not sure if this was an actual catalog kit with added snare or what?

Also not sure the kick drum is a WFL at all. Any ideas? It's pretty beat up, with a bunch of plugged holes and no badge. But with some work , I think it'll be a good sounding players kit. Ill know more once the covering comes off.

All the drums were recovered in Sparkle Brite covering, which will be removed promptly. I'm thinking I'll be stripping these down to bare wood and re-painting/lacquering.

Any insight as to what may or may not seem right to you here, and how I should go about refinishing... please let me know.

Cool glad you went and bought them the bass drum can you post more pics of it can't tell from what you already posted.

fish - if that 1st. photo in the second set of pix is the bass drum, it looks like it might have been a converted marching drum! It's narrow and it looks like they plugged the holes for the marching harness.

Really nice old tubs, man. You really found a cool set of drums. Are you going with a solid color of lacquer or a two-tone Duco-style paint job? Either way, I'll be watching to see how these turn out.

I'm thinking it isn't a Wfl simply because it should have a mahogany interior and yours doesn't here is a WFL zephyr bass drum I completely restored.

And what about the toms? Are they supposed to be maple interiors?

Sorry, unfortunately I sold it to a very un deserving forum member, I honestly can't remember if the toms are mahogany or maple, it's been a few years since I have had a complete WFL zephyr kit. kevins has one I'll get him to chime in on this.

I believe you are right, all the WFL interiors I have seen were African Mahogany with solid 1 ply maple re-rings. How would you describe the difference in sound and performance between the 24" WFL 3ply Mahogany bass drums verses the 3ply Maple/Poplar/Maple Ludwig bass drums that you have owned and played over the years?

Not sure yet. I like the idea of a duco, but wouldnt know where to start. I have a cabinetmaker friend who's finisher can spray these solid for a song, but probably wouldn't be able to get a duco. Any color ideas???

i would like to try to do them myself too. Is there a spray can product that would work?

A couple more questions... Do I remove and most likely destroy the tacked head before refinish? And the badge on the snare? And do I need to strip to bare wood to repaint?

There are some pretty sweet WFL zephyr lug kit on ebay right now for $600. The have been spray painted blue.
