Don Henley/Ludwig LOVE Last viewed: 10 seconds ago

Been watching History Of The Eagles. Interesting to see Don Henley played the same pre-1969 Ludwig Classic set and 6.5 Supra prior to forming the group through their final tour in 1980. He also recorded with it until the Long Run album. Not a huge fan of his sound but always admired his minimalist, for the song, style.

Never play it the same way once.

I thought the program was well done. Love The Eagles...they bring me back. Thanks, dad.

Whatever Henley lacked as a drummer, he more than made up for with those golden pipes! That voice is one-of-a-kind. Add in the killer harmonies from Glenn and Tim and Viola! The Eagles!

Henley wasn't a bad drummer actually. Kept a good beat/groove and the fills were powerful, simple and to the point. Tasty player over-all.

Great documentary, next viewing will be my third already. Love the music those guys made. I grew up with their music in my ears.

There are many drummers considered a "drummers' drummer" renowned for their virtuosity, technical skills, and showmanship. I like to think that there is another category - a Great Musician who uses a drumset to make beautiful music. Drummers in this second category are often overlooked in favor of "the fastest, most blazing, cutting edge" players. This is understandable, for we idolize those whose solo virtuosity entertains us while advancing the art. However, rare indeed are musicians like Don Henley, Ringo Starr, Ole Brunkert, Levon Helm, et al, whose musicianship is expressed in phrasing, beats, dynamic range, accents, rolls, fills and pauses, as part of a perfect and impeccable musical whole. Their body of recorded work stands timeless, their style of playing so deceptively simple as to be virtually inimitable.

I am a great fan of their music too, been following them right from the start. I have seen them live on three occasions & the studio sound has been recreated live each time. In the 70's we covered dozens of their hits with myself sharing much of the lead vocal. I had a nice "one on one" with Glen Frey, at a tiny little bar in Sydney in '95 & my wife later did the same. Felders book is a good read if you get a chance...

Have not seen this Doco advertised down here yet, may have to wait for the DVD...

Cheers

The documentary is running on satellite TV. If you or a friend has a satellite connection, you can cop it off there.

I haven't read Felders book, but there was a heap of bad blood between him and Glenn. I can't imagine he had very many good things to say about Glenn in the book. Too many 'Alpha males' in that band. Something had to give... turns out it was Felder.

John,

Sounds like you don't need to read the book, your bad blood appraisal rings through in the book loud & clear. I did find reference to the early years interesting, with names like Tom Petty, Jackson Browne etc lurking in & out of stories.

Cheers

Henley and Marty Balin are two of my all-time fav male singers of the classic rock era. Instantly recognizable and certainly one of a kind.

Don Henley and Glen Frey used to share an apartment. Jackson Browne lived in the apartment underneath them. Can you imagine all that musical talent living next to each other in the same building? I'm sure there was a lot of cross-pollination between them. The music that was coming out of L.A. in those years was prolific and all of it was going right to number one the minute it hit the charts. Lots of great artists and writers out of L.A.

Yes, I was listening to Linda Ronstadt's self-titled debut LP yesterday and the listing of credits show many of members who were to become The Eagles just a year or two later. The Laurel Canyon Era..?
