Rogers Red Onyx

Here's a kit that I sold several years ago that I wish I had kept. It was in pretty rough shape when I got it but, after a good cleaning and polish, I was extremely happy with the results. I'm not certain but I think it was catalogued as the Rogers "Citadel" kit. It featured a 20" bass drum, 12" rack tom and 14" floor tom. The snare drum seen in the pic was just a "throw in" by the prior owner.

When I got the kit the wrap on the floor tom was totally trashed. I contacted Precision Drum and they were kind enough to send me a sample of their Red Onyx to see if it would match the original wrap. I was amazed at how closely it did. I then had them re-wrap the floor tom in it.

I guess I'd have to categorize this kit as "the one that got away"!DOH

My favorite kit - the '67/68 catalog red onyx Citadel. Citadel had no cymbal mount on the bass. Here's the big brother from '69. It's not quite the same, but it was less than half the price.

Dan: "Big" brother or "Little" brother. It really doesn't matter -- They both look great IMHO! BTW.....Thanks for the info regarding the absence of a cymbal mount on the Citadel kit. Any idea what model mine was?

Swingtime is the bass with a swivomatic tom mount and swivomatic cymbal mount (uses a hex rod).

Jollity Drum Farm has a section in the loners area (I think) that defines layouts for bass drums. The Vintage Drum Guide on the link in this site also shows various layouts in the catalogs.

Truth is, there were a number of variants, and the only reason Citadel sticks out in my mind is that the red onyx kit with 20, 12, 14 layout and the single tom mount only on the bass, as shown in the '67/68 catalog, is the one I wanted in the days when I could only afford the catalog. Oddly enough, that made it less expensive! I think the Louis Bellson Citation was laid out the same way and appeared in the '64 catalog with B&B lugs.

Funny thing is, the Citation is listed with a 14x14, but shown with a 16x16. Similarly, the Headliner is listed with a 16x16 and shown with a 14x14. Love those freaky catalog things.

The '67/68 is a very much more professional catalog though because they had the CBS money behind the production. Very accurate in that regard. All color and one of the nicest catalogs ever.

I love Rogers Red Onyx! I was out at Professional Drum Shop in Hollywood last weekend. They have a Headliner kit, complete with matching Tower snare drum, in Red Onyx. I asked Stan how much... $2700! If I was really serious about another kit to add to my collection, I'd ask for the "friends and family discount" and see how much!!
