You did an exceptional job with this kit! It really shines! Pearl's take on the Swivo-style tom arms resulted in a very adjustable arm. I've no doubt, thanks to you, that these drums are ready to rock for another generation!

Those are beauties. Nice. yeah I agree. Even these taiwans are light years better than the stuff that passes for entry level today.

Thanks Mark, I've always liked these tom mounts. I never use 2 mounted toms so when I set this configuration them up to photograph I have a real problem getting both toms at in a playable position. But with these mounts it's quite easy. I have an early 80s Pearl kit with the famous ugly Pearl mounts and it's beyond me how you get the 2 toms in a good position. I realise others will read this and think I'm stupid but I just never play 2 up:o

Larryz - I agree, these are not great drums but compared to the budget stuff today thay are pretty good quality. They look much better and the wrap isn't falling off, something I see on modern kits that are supposed to be intermediate level. And seriously, after 35 years, apart from very minor wrap fade and the wear on the heads it is like brand new.

Great job on that kit. I have one that was maybe the next model year - same wrap and lugs, different tom mount and spurs. Bought 'em new in 1973 or so, I still play them.

Here ya go. This was the first day home. Note the tom mount, a little different from yours, but the lugs and wrap are the same.

Great photo. Love the year in '73 for music too. Band on the Run, Song Remains the Same, etc. By the way, how big is that bass drum, like 32" or something? Looks huge ... lol. I know you were just a kid but still... :)

I just couldn't resist commenting on this thread. First of all:

Fayray, those look great! You did a good detail job! Secondly,

dharma bum, yours look like they were actually "Pearl" branded, and not just because of the logo on the BD. The tom holder is exactly what Pearl used in the early-to-mid-70s, and your BD T-handles are Pearl as well. The spacing of the Ts/claws suggests a 20-lug BD as opposed to the 16 lugs on the Maxwin.

Fayray was right in his original post about Maxwin being an entry-level set. Pearl made a LOT of different brands in that era (but maybe not as many different as in the 60s!). Yes, the wrap and the lugs would/could be the same; but then the number of lugs, style of spurs, holders, Ts, claws, etc. would be usually noticably (sp?) "cheaper." Usually the contruction of the shells as well, as Pearl offered fiberglass and wood-fiberglass on their top-of-the-line stuff and a 9-ply wood shell (same as the wood-FG, but without the FG) on their cheaper lines.

Just wondering... dharma bum, are yours FG or wood-FG?
