New Stars Before Rehab

From Drummerjohn333

Good deal on the Zilcos! I have never even seen any of those in person. I might be interested in the larger of the other 2 cymbals. Let me know if you find any markings at all. If you don't find any at all, they may be Zildjian 2nds or something?? Honestly, I have never heard an MIJ splash sound any good. Have you? John

The larger cymbal is pretty beat up and dented, etc. It seems pretty heavy more like some type of ride cymbal. I will give it a close examination and see if I can find any markings but first glance I couldn't find any.

Hello,From all I've seen before from these blue round 'Made in Japan' badges, they are made by Star. It may be, that this rack tom was added a little later and wasn't available any more with a Star badge, but with this MIJ badge. The 'Pro Pedal' is Star made, too.May I use your pic of your drumset and this blue round badge for my website, please?Ralf

Yes, go ahead and use any of the photos you want. They are all here at:

If you want any more photos of specific items let me know before I start taking them apart for rehabbing.

Pretty cool kit. I like how all the MIJ Blue Sparkle kits have that faded and worn in look.

I have a Black Jack kit (in Blue Onyx) that has the exact same double tom mount (even though it only has one tom). Your kit is the only other one I have seen that is like that.

Have fun with these!

I just took a bunch more photos of the drums and the lugs, the what appears to be original heads??? on some of the drums, and the insides of the 13" Tom and the Snare through the bottom head, along with the Bass Drum tension rods. Maybe it is a Pearl set but it has these Star Badges on everything and I don't think they have ever been messed with as the inside looks very original on the 13" tom.

Link to all the photos: http://www.pbase.com/nopork/star_drums

One of you guys asked about the larger cymbal. It does say Made In Japan, die stamped into the cymbal, right on the outer edge, in real small letters. The cymbal itself is filthy and dented up some. It sure is heavy for a 16" so I am thinking it must have been some type of ride cymbal.

So I am relying on you guys to let me know what you think it is. A Star, but really a Pearl or ???? If something else let me know what I should call it.

Thanks

After going over the photos that you posted this is what i think of you set..

Photo 3,9,13,21 are Star..Photo 6 looks to be Pearl lug..

I wish the photos were clearer then they are,so what i did is iam going to post some photos of Star and Pearl made drums..

The first three photos are of the Pearl lug,you will see its not the same as a Star lug,the top line in middle of lug is flat not rounded and the lug is not the same cast as the Star lug...The Star lugs the 2 types i will post photos in the posting after this posting..I will point out things out then....Mikey

These are the photos of the Star made lugs..In two styles both have rounded top at the line in middle of lug..You will also see that the Star lugs are cast in not the same way as Pearl you will also see the Star made lugs do not have the "Tip" were the mounting screw goes into the lug...Their are some other things that i can lisy but at this time i don't want to give every thing away about these two types of Lugs..

This will be in a book that a friend and me will be doing, the book should be out at the end of this year.It will cover the types of lugs, hardwear, finish.strainers, shells, names used.ete.ete about these 60's M.I.J. drums..The book will have many color photos.Off the top of my head the book will sell from 39.99 to 49.99.

Finally got done cleaning up and detailing the Star set. The 12" tom was added later as it doesn't match perfectly to the others and it had different lugs. They that had the screw mount protrusion that went into shell versus all the others that were flush with the lug itself.

I completely disassembled everything, buffed and waxed the shells, polished all the chrome parts and sealed them, got the bass drum pedal working again, and fixed the cymbal stands. Then threw on some used heads and left the originals on the bottoms of all the drums except the bass drum. A lot of work but worth it when ones sees the finished project. I even left the bass drums hoops alone as they only had minor rash in spots and they are only original once.

The shell on the bass drum was really thick and of many plies, I was surprised at that.

I set it up showing both ride toms and then the single tom setup, which I think is how it originally was purchased. Quite a difference between the before and after photos.

Hi Mikey.....question for you:

Was there ever an MIJ copy of the Trixon bass drum mounted Cymbal arm, with the funny looking cymbal tilter?

I have a Trixon Telstar set and I've been looking for one of those arms for a long time. Cant seem to find one.

Thanks!
