Jeff,No, the 10x14 is just a FG double-headed tom; so no snare beds at all. And to be honest, this is actually new territory for me as on all of my previous marching drum 'cut-downs' I've cut down from to top, purposely re-using the original snare beds. Plus, this one of course is fiberglass... so I'll cross that bridge when I get there, probably this weekend. The one thing that concerned me most on this drum was the position of the breather hole. Had it been right in the center (top to bottom) of the shell it may have posed a problem with bearing edges, but its location ended up being almost perfect since I'm making a 5x14 and a 4x14 out of this shell. As for the Rock Hard, I've not had any trouble with it falling out on wood shells. So even though this is also new territory for me, one thing I discovered when filling in these old holes in the fiberglass -- none of the holes I filled were 'clean' holes. What I mean by that is that all of the holes actually had fiberglass 'fibers' (still attached to the shells) inside the holes. I had noticed that when working with these shells before but usually just reused the same holes so I didn't thing anything about it. But, these fibers should actually help to hold the Rock Hard in place, if it don't 'stick' as well to the fiberglass. I hope all of that made sense... it did to me!Bill

Oh you always make sense. With the hole being rough as they are yo will have no trouble. I was picturing the holes clean with slightly rounded edges. As for the snare bed,, me too, I will cross the same bridge with you.

The inside of the tubs have all been sanded and then filled in the 'lows' with some more Rock Hard. They will get their final sanding tomorrow evening.

I am really pleased with how the Rock Hard has worked on these fiberglass shells. After the final sanding I don't think you'd even be able to notice the fillings except for the lighter color.

With a little luck & time I'll get some more progress pics up tomorrow.

Sorry Jeff, it's Black Oyster Pearl... not blue. This will be a "Ringo" knock-off.

I was up & around a little earlier than normal this morning so I actually worked on them a little. I gave the 9x13 its final sanding, and removed the blue tape I had put on for "filler" stop. Like I posted last night, I am really happy with the way the Rock Hard bonds with the fiberglass. So this one's ready for the interior to be painted; once it's painted you won't be able to see the filler. Funny thing on this drum: it had 4 "fill holes" in it already, I'm I'm thinking it was factory done. It obviously had been fitted for the early-to-mid-seventies "hex" mount, but came with the 7/8" mount. The hole for the arm was the same, but besides the 3 mount holes for the newer mount there were also 4 holes (filled) that perfectly line up with a hex mount. The filling was some type of plastic resin, and very professionally done just darker in color; that's how I noticed it as you can't "feel" it at all.

I also finished the 10x14 that I will be cutting down for the 5x14 SD for this kit and the 4x14 Slingerland Buddy Rich knockoff. Next step on it will be cutting it down and cutting new bearing edges and snare beds. Hope to do that Saturday.

Again, no pics at this time, but if all goes well I'll get a couple up tonight... and will show some of my Rock Hard fills as well as the factory fills I mentioned. I've got to get some pics taken for some stuff I'll be putting up for sale so I'll just make sure I take some for this project.

Well gee I guess I missed the part about the Ringo kit. Anyway, still interested in seeing the finished product.

What paint are you going to use for the inside of the shells?

I've got some Kilz spray primer. It's white but will cover just about anything. I'll spray a small area first to see how it sticks (I am a little concerned about that). I've gone ahead and lightly "ruffed up" the entire interior with 180 grit sandpaper.

I've never tried to paint the FG shells before... but have had some in that somebody had painted so I know something will work!

I'm off work in less than 30 minutes, and actually am anxious to get started at it again!

Bill - Please don't forget to put on the face mask -every time- you mess with that fiberglass! You don't want any of that crap to get into your lungs, either as; dust from sanding, or particles from cutting it. Nasty stuff bro...
