Nope on second viewing there do not appear to be any knobs and you can just make out tension bolts so Duplex is the probability, I wonder when the film dates from.

1951. That was Paul Landres film "Rhythm Inn". It starred Kirby Grant and had the excellent Fritz Feld in it.

That's Pete Daily and Matty Matlock blowing horns in that band. Deems only appeared in two movies that I know of. This one and the 1956 film "High Society" when he was backing Satchmo.

Oh my what a gorgeous kit! Congratulations on getting your hands on such a gem. The drums are lucky they've been passed to someone who treasures them. Thanks for sharing the pics and great story.

Autotune was the name of the 'drum-tuning system' used on the Duplex drums. Either designation is legit because both names relate to the same drum. You say autotune to most drummers (who know vintage drums) and they'll know exactly what you're talking about.Semantics... 6 of 1, half dozen of the other. Or, as they used to say in Brooklyn, 'same difference!' lolJohn

Wasn't it knob-tension? I don't believe they ever used 'autotune'....I think an aficionado might be able to figure it out. ... Yeah, Barrett had his doubles down. But nowadays, everybody has fast singles...so I wouldn't say doubles are more...cheating, but rather everybody practices RLRL these days. The double stroke roll isn't as common among drumset drummers, from what I see. Louie was nasty at them, as was Buddy. Weckl has it all. I could go on and on. ...

Ah... not quite. Not as long as Buddy was around he wasn't! LOL!! Funny story: Barrett Deems was playing a club in Chicago back in the day and had a sign in front of the club billing him as "The Worlds Fastest Drummer". Buddy popped into the club and went right up to Barrett and said, the worlds fastest drummer? Really? Barrett promptly went outside and removed the sign. True Story! Regardless... Barrett Deems was an excellent player and was pretty darn fast too... just not Buddy fast! Tommyp

Yeah, he only used that sign when he knew Buddy wasn't in town! A guitar player friend of mine has an autographed picture of Barrett, knew him fairly well.

I will see if he has any pics of him with that kit.

Very cool! I'm considering the RIMS FT basket for the 14. I'm too short to play that big tom on top of that ginormous BD. I've been playing it mounted way over to the side, but it's a bit of a reach. Thanks for the pic of yours!

I would be very grateful for anything you can come up with. Please post pics in my other thread: http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=35633.

Thank you very much!

I really tried to use the clamp mounts, but just can't get them in a comfortable position. I gig mine routinely, so the RIMS mount is an easy out, without modding the drums. BTW, go to [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tg9Kzqg2Txs[/ame] to see Jay Bellarose absolutely rock an RK with Dianne Krall on a Tom Waits tune. It's awesome!! If that doesn't work, search Dianne Krall Temptation RKL..

As I understand it, and was told to me by my Drum Teacher from the 60's, Phil Stanger, (who was close friends with Barrett for literal decades right till the end of Barrett's days) the title "World's Fastest Drummer" was invented-given by Barrett's wife. [Attachment: 53518]

Here's a couple pics of one of Barrett's sets, and this one is mine. The first Pic shows it on display for sale at the Chicago Vintage Drum Show. This was 2000, or 2001, my memory has gotten a bit fuzzy on which year this was? This set was supposedly manufactured in 1980 for Barrett.

The set came home with me that afternoon after some "small" cash traded hands. I met the then owner of the set six months prior to that day, as he sold me a flawless 1960 COB 5x14 Supra (which I later sold back to him, shucks!)

The second pic is the next day, with the set roughly set up in my living room, then living in Chicago. The next week all new Paiste Sig Series Cymbals, and New Beat Hi Hats were gotten from the Drum Pad in Palatine, Ill. Original Slingy Heads were stored, for Evans G1, then later Remo Ambassadors. The BD Reso Head is original.

As for hardware, I later swapped out the old Slingy BD Pedal, HH Stand, and Snare Stand for a Tama Iron Cobra, DW Snare Stand and DW 5000 3-leg (I of course have all the original hardware retained). The Cannister Throne has gone into a later new constructed H&B Vulcanized Case as this Set didn't come with a case for the Throne.

I later acquired a mint Prototype COB 6-1/2"x14" Spitfire 12 Lig that was also Barrett's, and acquired from the same seller as the Set. (Well, we did a trade for a mint NOS Big R Dyna I had) Mark
