Got the snare for my D-20 kit! (SDM5 snare)

So, it seems these really don't come along all that often. I would still prefer, and am still looking for, the matching red ripple SD5 wood shell snare drum, but at least this one is complete (less muffler) so I will have any needed parts when that red ripple wood drum comes my way! I have a Rogers muffler (Yamaha made) so that is taken care of. Otherwise, this looks complete!

I believe Yamaha copied Gretsch in many ways with their drum offerings, and the snare adjustment on both sides of the drum further reinforces this theory. Pretty cool detail for a old Japanese made drum!

So here are the 'before' pictures, stolen from the auction listing. I may have paid a bit too much for it, but I have been looking for several months now and this was the first one to come up... It came out of Canada, and could be a member, so if it was you reading this who sold this to me, Thanks again!

Anyway, it is already apart, and undergoing clean-up. I hope to have it playing very soon!

that looks nice Jim. I have the same drum that came with my kit but it was spray painted silver, had the throw replaced and no muffler. With the paint removed it showed some chrome loss but more importantly it sounds really good. They are a really good quality steel snare.

I've been following the resto on your kit and it's looking great. That's going to be an awesome kit.

Thanks guys!

I haven't played a steel snare in over a decade, (and that was a 10-lug Pearl stencil) so it will be interesting!

I think I was lucky this drum was/is so complete- as I said, I have a muffler for it, so it will be 'whole' again very soon, probably next week.

The rest of the kit sounds awesome. I couldn't be happier! It totally nails the vintage sound and also vibe with that cool wrap, and quite honestly holds it's own against a very nice round badge Gretsch kit my friend has. On the consolette the 12 probably won't ring out as true or long as it does with the rim mount I have it on now, but the floor tom on the original legs is quite impresive.

I think for my total outlay of cash on this project, it is a real serious contender in the vintage drum world! I see why guys who have them, love them so much!

From Fayray

I have the same drum that came with my kit but it was spray painted silver...

Looking at your 'after' picture, if I were in that position, this is what I would do:

+wash the badge with acetone. You may want to use q-tips to get it clean. You want as much of the nasty silver paint off as possible, but realize most of the black will come with it (that's OK)

+Pull the lugs adjacent to the badge (maybe not with eight lugs- you want space to work).

+Mask tight around (under if you can) the badge, and also the back side of the grommet.

+Spray the badge with semi-gloss black paint

+Let dry 10-15 minutes (not tacky; not totally dry either)

+wash raised chrome areas of the badge with acetone dampened cloth- T shirt material is probably best, not too soft

+Allow to dry fully (a couple days)

+polish badge with Brasso (if needed) and pull tape.

I think that will work well for you, but it is up to your comfort level to decide on that... I think it will work well, and that's what I would do!
