Someone got a clue about this old DESLAURIER french snare drum!???

Loading...

Hi there guys!

I found this French beauty on a Chilean flea market back in 1998.

It's a 6.5 x 14, 8 lugs Baby Blue pearl? DESLAURIER snare drum

I've been googling and looking for any info on the web, but no luck so far.

The construction is pretty neat, however the wood looks too soft for my taste.

I'd situate the construction and design in the late 40's, early 50's, but that's just a guesstimation. It looks like hand made construction. There's no badge. Just the engraving on the single flanged hoops and some ink stamps inside the shell that reads: "Fro? de Tambours and Grosses Caisses

Arc Mo ROBIN TALMA

P. DESLAURIER ,SUC

25 rue MICH l camte

PARIS"

Ths lugs are solid brass and got no inserts. The strainer has a suprasensitive

system. The muffler is situated exactly in the middle of the shell so you can choose muffling the top or bottom head with just a twist of the beer tap like dial.

The finish is a pretty well mantained baby blue pearl that I've never seen before. It has some decoloration though, comparing to the area closer to the edges of the shell. The Bearing edges are perfect and rounded. The tension rods are the typical european design with the classic "screw" head. There're clips retainers that conect to the lug.

The instrument looks 100% original but the heads (I'm looking for calfskins for this one). I'd love to have some info on this company. If someone of you fellas can share some light, that'd be truly appreciated!!! ( And please forgive my english!!!)

I googled P. Deslaurier and this page came up. The name is mentioned under the Courtois heading. It's a page from horn-u-copia. He's mentioned at this page in a different search under the same company name (Courtois ). They manufactured brass instruments in the late 1800s and early 1900s in Paris.

Perhaps they cast brass lugs for drum shells and completed assembly at the plant?

Thanks Jaye! Actually Mike was my first shot on this one. He saw the snare on last year's NAMM but he didn't have any info. He has never seen one before. The incredible thing its that the guy who sold the snare to me sold the whole set to another guy in Chile. I tried very hard to find the rest of the set but I couldnt. Im still trying even though I live in America I got friends looking and asking around for me down there. The set used to belong to the French Ambassador in Chile back in the 60's. An old man called Manuel (dont know last name) who used to build hand made drum sets called "Superman"!!!!! bought the set from this gentleman. He told me the set was a 13",16" and 24" bass drum complete with stands and pedal. All of them original Deslaurier. He sold the set to this guy on the flea market. I found just the snare there, The set was gone. However Mr. Manuel still has the HH stand but doesnt want to sell it (Ill keep trying though!).

This was my first post here on the forum and Im still trying to find some info. about this obscure French company. I have the drum for sale at my website but if someone were about to buy it Id be really tempted to keep it. I guess I should just face the fact that I will never find another drum like this and even though it might never became as collectable as the American drums it still has its own personality and vintage Mojo...If someone has a little info on this ASBA's Grampa...Please let me know!!!

Each town got at least one luthier who was able to built diff. instrument.

one good exemple is the still living maison: Atelier Philippe Rault in Maison-Laffitte. Visit their site, it's beautiful.
