Hi I just got another one of vintage pearl set,it is 7pcs with 22 BD, 8 and 10 concert toms, 12 and 13 rack toms, 16 FT and 14 snare. The badge does not have "japan" under Pearl, the wood looks like painted with gray,is that normal??? The tom mount and arms looks good but different from my fiberglass set. Please help me again to ID this set, year? model or series name? wood type?.The previous owner said he bought it 1976 but i think that is not accurate. He said he bought it with concert toms included. Help2

1976 is very possible.

This was their "W" series drums (for wood shells) as opposed to their "WF" series (Wood-Fiberglass -- same shell as the "W" series but with a fiberglass lining on the inside) and their "FG" series (all fiberglass shells).

The gray painted interior is factory.

The double tom mount is correct for this series of drums.

The badge is correct as well, as it was the same basic style as what would be on your FG drums, but definately "cheaper" and yes, "Japan" is missing.

You might also note that the spurs, claws, and T-handles are different from the other two lines, but do appear to be correct. The floor tom leg brackets were cheaper versions, too. Also only 16 lugs on the 22" BD, but the other series would both have 20.

So, IMO, what the previous owner told you is probably correct. And, they do look to be in pretty good shape!

BTW -- are the concert toms fiberglass, or are they all-wood, too?

And do they have Pearl badges as well?

The older catalogs I have only have the concert toms available in fiberglass shells - and depending upon the year of manufacture they could be the regular fiberglass (kinda a tan, earth-tone colored interior) or their "phenolic" material shells (more of a maroon colored interior).

Just curious...

Finally!!! Bill thank you so much for the infos. You are amazing! Anyway the concert toms are wood too, that is where I see that the interior was painted in gray. The badge is exactly the same from the rest, and it is 8" and 10".

Yeah, after I ask that question I saw the badges in the pics in your second post.

I've just learned something new here -- the wood shell concert toms. I really thought you'd come back telling me they were fiberglass or phenolic. So, when I get home I'm going to check my 70s Pearl catalogs. They may have a specific set-up like you've got in the W series.

Also, does your snare drum have a Pearl badge as well?

Thanks,

Bill

Even in my first post you can clearly see the picture of concert tom showing the interior part of the shell painted in gray. The snare had a badge but it's has been removed. I can see the marked/impression of the badge on my snare.

Thanks

Oooops. Sorry. I didn't notice that was the inside of one of the CTs. I just noticed the gray painted interior and didn't look closer. My bad.

Like I said, I'll check catalogs when I get home. If for no other reason I'm curious to see if Pearl offered this specific configuration or if this was a special order...

And the reason I asked about the badge on the SD is because from what I can see it looks like the standard "generic" MIJ metal SD of the era that ended up with only-God-knows how many different name brands on them. Not a bad SD though.

This set really looks like one that was taken care of. You sure won't find many of these in this condition.
