Wrap removal HELP!!

Loading...

From hawghunter

I had to get this one so hot to get the wrap loose, it burst into flames a few times. So I had to go real, real slow with a thin, sharp, putty knife. Heat, scrape, pry, pull, curse, then repeat as needed. Remember! safety first.

Yeah, anything pre-1965 can do that pretty easy. I've had it happen several times. It might be kinda funny what the neighbors think, 'cause when I strip wrap off of shells I do it outside in my driveway. When one catches on fire, I just give it a gentle "roll" down the drive and it usually smothers the flames pretty quickly (you know, the old "drop and roll" idea?). I actually try to have enough control that it don't happen, but hey, it's for sure not an exact science!

OK... an update (somewhat)...

I'm not back to the BD yet. However, I did need to get two cut-down jobs started today (10x14s down to 5.5x14s). It has been getting into the 20s down here the last 3 or 4 nights. Although I do keep a good portion of my inventory in a couple of upstairs bedrooms (don't worry, all our kids are gone and my wife does NOT keep any rooms "just as they were!"), I also have my garage full. Well the shells I needed were in the garage.

When I got off work I headed to the garage to make my measurements and warm up the table saw... and I thought I'd see how "tight" the glue was after some colder nights... and WOW!! The wrap popped right off with very little damage to the outer mahogany ply! I mean VERY LITTLE damage!

I probably won't get back to that BD until the weekend, but it's still supposed to get cold like this at night... so I'm hoping that wrap is gonna pop, too!!

I thought my idea of getting it cold would be worth a try. Let us know how the stubborn one goes Bill.

Thank you!

Sorry this took so long to report on. Just been really busy since the holidays.

Well, the "stubborn" one didn't go well at all, even after the cold treatment. It took several hours hours very tediously chipping the wrap off a little at a time. Oh well, live and learn.

This drum was part of a drum line. Funny thing I discovered, though -- this drum had the same NC keystone badge as two of the drums in a set of quads I (re)built for the same drum line. Those two had the same wrap -- but the wrap on these two was only glued on in an area about 4" wide at the seem only. Once I got passed that on those two the wrap of course just fell off. Sure wish the BD would have been that way!!

Oh, BTW -- Happy New Year!!!

Bill - how cold does it get at night where you are? Wait till the night temps drop down low, then put the shell out overnight. Or, stick it in a freezer for 24 hours.See if that doesn't help. The wrap should just drop/bubble off the shell after a night in the freezing cold.John

+ 1 to this. If possible that is. In MI it's the perfect time right now to remove wraps!

One possible "problem" may be that it's been pretty mild around here, tempature-wise. We've only had a couple of nights that it's gotten under 20 so far this winter...

No, on this one it didn't work at all. I almost decided to look for another drum to use with that order, but decided to get "stubborn" myself and chip it all off, mostly in small pieces...

just my 2 cents......I put a Ludwig basedrum wrap that was removed with the intent of saving the wrap at the expense of the shell and then put the wrap, with chunks of shell still attached and put that wrap in my deepfreezer

for 2 days...........nothing. That black oyster wrap is still sitting under a table

in the laundry room because I'm sick of trying to make it useable. I gues I can use pieces for patches.

I picked up a ludwig blue oyster bass shell that was water damaged for the wrap. Someone who had sold a BOP re-wrap snare on the Bay told me he soaked the shell in warm water to remove the wrap from a bass drum. I have not tried it yet but some of the wrap is already lifting from the shell and the plies are de-laminating too.

Has anyone here tried this?
