Opinion Poll Time: Most Common Wrap Finishes on MIJ Kits

Loading...

I would like all of you studious, sophisticated drum afficiandos to weigh in on the following question:

In vintage MIJ Kits, what were, in order of popularity and/or commonly found wrapped finishes?

I'll start:

Sparkles:

1. Red

2. Blue

3. Gold

4. Champaign/Ginger

Others:

1. Black Diamond Pearl

2. White Marine Pearl

3. Blue or Red Onyx

4. Swirls (Root Beer or Stratas etc.)

5. Satin Flames

I am interested to see how you guys rank yours. I would say overall, that Red and Blue sparkle are the most commonly found MIJ wraps, followed by Black Diamond Pearl.

I think that I'd agree with you, sir. Perhaps, blue sparkle was even a bit more common than red. Just an opinion. I have three Star snares in blue sparkle, one complete set in blue sparkle and one complete kit in black diamond pearl.

Just a drummer who loves all things about vintage drums! Nothing more, nothing less.

I agree ... primary color sparkles (Blue and Red) are what I have seen the most of. Primarilly up for sale online and in Pawn Shops.

As far as being "popular" nowadays I would say the wilder wraps are more popular ... may not show up for sale as often because of that ... and that could influence why I've seen more primary color sparkles too.

I remember looking in the Sears Christmas catalog when I was a kid, and it seemed pretty standard to have a blue sparkle kit depicted, and that's the one I wanted. Have come across several since in my later adventures.

I think you have that there list about right. The only thing I would change is to separate the Blue from Red Onyx and put the Blue Onyx at the bottom, being the rarest of all these.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

The list looks good to me, too! As most have already stated, I would also put Blue Sparkle ahead of Red Sparkle.

Wasn't oyster pearl a pretty standard wrap for early Star kits?

Good point. I guess I was lucky when I found a Blue Onyx "Black Jack" kit about a year ago. Very "Rogers-esque". It was missing 1 bass drum hoop, so I ordered some Blue Onyx inlay from Precision, and it matched exactly with original wrap, albiet a little brighter and truer, because it wasn't 40 years old!
