1963 Slingerland's

Loading...

My fully restored & beloved 1963 Slingerland kit which I have owned from NEW. They sound even better with time. I have played just about every drum kit that has been made over the decades, ranging from Trixon, D W and Yamaha etc etc, but for me Im so glad I hung on to my amazing Radio King 1963 Slingerlands which I purchased at the tender age of 16 yrs old from a very well known dealer in North London UK. It costs me about £325.00, that was a small fortune then. I have added a set of EVANS G2 coated on the Toms & a EVANS EMAD2 clear batter on the B.D. This produces a very warm but plenty of bottom end attack, the sustain which these great heads produce is easily controlled by the internal dampers and they sing LOUD!!!!.Tuning is a breeze, Never a need to apply any Gaffer tape any where. Stick a set of mic's any where near the kit, the end result is just sheer joy for me and a very smiley & happy sound engineer. In 1964 I was on a small tour with a few big artists around at the time including " The WHO " when Keith Moon had to borrow my kit as his Premier kit failed to turn up on time. He past comment after as to how nice they were to play with a great full sound. I put it all down to the aged classic thin Maple Shells that just get better & better with time.

This kit will go to the grave with me !!!!, just hope that's not toooooo soon LOL !!!!

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Hi, no sorry I purchased my beloved 1964 Ludwig supraphonic 400 NEW and gave away the original wooden snare to my guitarist's son who was showing interest in playing drums at the age of 6yrs, but regretted it ever since, but the luddy really does sing all day long & now sports all the pitting as they all did then and would never ever part company with. My theory is when they made this kit (1963 stamped inside) the Maple was slow grown then unlike today's timber fast grown. As each year passes the kit sounds better and every few years I give the inside of the shells a light coating of Danish oil if only to keep out the moisture. The Kit is my baby and like most of my things, have taken care of her.

Thanks for the comments,

take care

Hi, thanks for the nice comments , its hard to put into words how this kit along with my Luddy 400 sounds but playing a top gig it just gives off this special kind of ring/ resonance that you just don't get with any other kit I have played over the decades and is totally unique and just put it down to the old maple shells. They will be given a chance to talk via my forthcoming book " The Most famous Unknown Band "

Take Care,

very nice, is that original tom mount ?

Hi, Thanks for the nice comments, as for the tom mount, the answer is No it is not the original Tom mount as I found early on after buying the kit (1963) that I could never achieve a comfortable set up with the 13" tom, the original conselette rail tom holder was very limiting ,so when the " Setomatic " holder was introduced I upgraded. But now I have moved on further still and the kit now sports a " Rims" system with Yamaha YESS holders & bass drum tom mount to suit as I thought I owed it to the kit to get the most resonance from it. It meant of course redrilling the bass drum shell a little but the wood shavings that were produced from the new holes were crushed & mixed with a neutral colour wood glue , and then used to refill the original holes. I blind man would love to see them. For the pureists this is a negative ordeal, but for me, and as a pro player all my life it was more importnt to have the kit as " A players kit " and not a show kit, hope you agree. I have also reinforced the Yamaha bass drum tom mount inside the bass drum shell with a stainless steel plate to help spread to forces & possible deflection on the thin ply shell. The Yamaha YESS system has added an extra fair amount of sustain to the toms and in my opinion " Sings even more " than it did before. Its also pleasing to see & hear the kit every bit as good as any top line modern kit ( DW ) for power, tone & resonance taking into account to toms are regular sizes and NOT power sizes. I'm now more than happy to take the kit any where in the world knowing that it will more than do the job asked of it and more.
