I've had these drums around 5 years and still haven't figured out what they are.

The previous owner completely refinished them and thought they were Sonor but

they are not. Judging by some extensive online research, the closest I can find is Tromsa but my lugs look longer than the Tromsa ones I've seen.

I haven't seen lugs like this anywhere else. Maybe they are a stencil brand made by Tromsa.

Also, the rack tom mount and shell construction sem to be the same.

Can anyone shed any light on this? I can show more photos if needed.

Although Tromsa made a mid-grade series of drums, with lugs much like that ( originally ,they were solid brass , with integral threads, then became stamped steel with nuts), these are an example of Lefima drums----made prior to , much like Sonor, their exodus from East Germany to West Germany, I would think. If I saw the interior of the shell, I could probably date them fairly closely.

I removed a lug before and they are just 3 sided U shaped pieces with

a square nut in either end.

The inner bass drum construction is basically the same as the one shown in this thread (including the screws). Although, I don't think my rings are this wide.

When I get a chance, i wll take some pictures of the inside of the shells.

I have only ever seen a Tromsa and a Lefima version of this type of lug, and the construction is quite similar. Here are the points of difference. For the short lugs, such as in John's picture, they are both fastened with one central carriage type bolt. For the longer lugs, such as on your bass drum and your floor tom , Tromsa used a carriage bolt near to each end , while Lefima retained the central bolt design. On the ends the Tromsa lugs are squared off, while the Lefima ones present an angle from the inner shell side towards the outside edge. Tromsa shells and Lefima shells, have superficial similarities, so seeing a picture is a must. As a basis, though. Tromsa small drum shells were Poplar with beech rerings and the rerings were absolutely consistent in dimension. Two ply , about 20mm. deep on the shell. The bass drums were almost all beech with two ply beech rerings, though deeper; around 30mm. Lefima shells were mostly beech but sometimes birch , with rerings usually thicker than deep. Both had a reinforcing patch over a butt joint, which is a common German shell construction.

Sorry for the huge delay. Here are some photos of the inside of the bass drum.

There are 2 reinforcing patches inside. One at the joint and the other i think is just for thicker support at the tom mount.

I also noticed extra holes in each shell - a small hole next to a larger one where there may have been a muffler or badge. The one i have pictured has a grommet in the larger hole but it the toms just have the two holes (aside from a grommeted vent hole on another part of the shell.

Let me know if this narrows it down any more. From what you guys have said so far, i think they're Lefima but any more details / proof would be great.

The construction looks similar to the Lefima shells I have seen. They are certainly not Tromsa.
