Most collectable MIJ kits/snares

Loading...

KK

I'm about to go on a lil regional buying trip.

Before I go, just as a guide,.....What are the most collectable(not necessarily most expensive) MIJ kits and snares. What years, models, wraps specifically.

I don't know what I'm gonna run into and it would be nice to have a list of stuff to keep an eye out for.

Thx in advance.

I'll throw mine out here. This is a "Stagemaster" made by Pearl in the mid-70s. I have only seen one pic of another (orphan tom on ebay) in the last 3 years since I have been looking. I bought some extra lugs for it from Mikey and he had had them for 25 years - because he never knew anybody who ever needed any/owned any. FT is a Kingston, but a great addition of any that are not an exact match.

If that does not scream rare MIJ, I don't know what does.

They are 3 ply with re-rings and sound amazing (nice deep tones). Crappy edges that I will eventually get re-worked.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

I'm not sure how rare this one is but when it was put up on the market, the interest was high and it went for about 3 times the regular price of an early 70's Star kit.

I'm guessing that it had to with the Fantasia Pearl finish.

This is an interesting post.I would think rarity and quality would be ways to weed out drums not to consider.Any Star/Royal Stars with teardrop lugs would be candidates for collectibility to me.Fantasia,Psychadelic(mod),Root Beer, any of those ribbon candy pearls are up there.Orphan drums in these styles or colors may end up helping your wallet later,as collectors may be looking for that matching drum to complete their set.Of course it's hard to pass up any $10 drum.....

I agree with Tom, this is interesting. I hope it expands into a lenghty thread that shows several cool MIJ kits. And I also agree with the lug style and wrap finish being a huge factor, as it is with any drum.

I think its a good time for us to show off our MIJ kits. I like them, they are inexpensive and some are really pretty cool. Here are some of mine.

I agree with Jeff but, also feel that individual tastes will play an important part in determining "collectability". Several months ago, Ralf was kind enough to post my gigging set on DRUM IMAGE GALLERY under "Star drumset in turquoise sparkle" if anyone wants to take a look. I don't know how to transfer the pictures here. Interesting post!!

How about these? 1968 Pearl Presidents. It was their top of the line and their first "Professional" set.

Both sets are for sale:

The yellow/gold strata is 12,14,20 and the blue oyster is 12,13,16,22

I would second the Zim-Gar, simply because of the quality build, yet they also do not let down in the color and style department.
