Traditional MIJ Wrap Finishes

Loading...

Hello,

I just picked up a nice Stewart 3 piece kit today (13"/16"/20") in Red Sparkle. No re-rings with painted gray interiors.

I already have a Red Sparkle MIJ, but I couldn't pass up the nice price on these. I think that I will re-wrap them. Here is my main question:

What, in your opinions, are the classic or traditional MIJ wrap colors?

I know that both red and blue sparkle were popular, as well as WMP and BDP. I want to re-wrap it so it will stay true to it's MIJ roots.

I already have a Blue Onyx, BDP, WMP and Red Sparkle wrapped MIJ kits, so I don't want to repeat any of those. I know that Blue Sparkle is an obvious choice, but since I have a Blue (Onyx) already, what suggestions would you have?

I was initially thinking Green Sparkle, but I can't remember seeing any Green Sparkle MIJ's. What about Gold or Orange Sparkle?

Also, a few secondary questions:

1. How easy is the wrap to take off of vintage MIJ shells? I have never taken wrap off these type of shells before. Any tricks (besides the hair dryer trick)?

2. I really wish this kit had a 22" instead of a 20" bass drum. Does anyone have a 22" Stewart (or identical lug MIJ) that they would want to sell or trade? Color is not important, as I'll be re-wrapping anyway. I can post a picture if you like.

Thanks for your opinons and advice.

My vote is for the Gold/Orange Sparkle. I have one of those (MIJ - Club style) and it is beautiful and sounds great. Mine is 3ply with rings though. I say Gold/Orange because they seem to be the same color - otherwise you see Champagne. It is a bit hard to picture this since we have not seen a pic, but we can assume that you have Slinger style HW. Seems that most the Stewarts were.

Red and Blue Sparkles seem like the standards, but honestly I can appreciate them, though they never really did much for me. Perhaps this is because we have associated these with our first drumsets which may sound like garbage on our memory.

BTW - I have all I need to build a 10in add-on for this to make it a 5 piece, just have not gotten around to it. I like to make things a bit unique, as most have never seen an MIJ with a 10incher on it.

"V" May i ask why do you want to re-wrap the set? Is the warp in poor condition..If you are going to do a re-wrap i would go with Gold or Orange sparkle..The 60's M.I.J. set's never came in a green sprakle..When it comes to removing the wrap on these shell.s first look at the seam at the top and bottom you may see some very small nial's that are holding the wrap on the shell..Also on these M.I.J. set's they did not used alot of glue on them so the finish will came off very easy. Just brake the seam down the overlap with a knife the wrap will come off in one piece...Keep the wrap for patches on other drums or give it away to a member who needs it...B.T.W. don't used a heat gun sometime these sparkle wrap's will flash fire on you......Mikey

Thanks Mikey-sage advice as always.

I am re-wrapping them soley because I already have a red sparkle MIJ kit, plus I have two other modern kits that are red dominant in color. The wrap is in good condition, although as on most Stewarts I have seen, the wrap looks to be faded and not a bright sparkle, but maybe that's the way they were made. I just want to have something a little more unique and, like Visine, "get the red out!". I have too many reddish kits!

I got these Stewarts for cheap, so my added expense for the wrap (which I install myself) won't add too much to my overall cost.

I think Gold/Orange Sparkle will look very cool. Blue Sparkle is cool, albeit more pedestrian. I'm still thinking about Green Sparkle too, even though it's not a true MIJ. I also thought about Satin Flames, but I have never liked Satin Flame anyway. I am going to photo document the whole process just for fun, so we'll see how it turns out.
