MIJ Bass Drum Badge Placement

Loading...

Gentlemen:

I know that this is a very trivial question but, I'm hoping someone knows the answer. I have three sets of Star made drums: a Star kit from around 1971, a set of Supremes and a set of Tempos. Why do the badges on the bass drum face the drummer? One would think that they'd face the audience.Anyone with a knowledge of MIJ trivia , please chime in. Thanks.

Hi Brian, i have seen 1000's of these set's made by Star from the 60's-70's Star made drums have moved the badge's all over the bass drum. Some Star set's have them on the back side of the tom mount closest to the drummer.some have them the other side of the mount facing the audience. Some even have them at the side's of the bass drum ..I don't have a clue why.....Mikey

Thanks, Mikey.I guess I just ended up with the drummer-facing kits. Just one of those things that will remain a mystery. Thanks again, Mikey.

I concur with Mikey here. I've seen them all over the place. And Mikey's definately the one with the most knowledge on these drums, as he's worked with them for a long, long time.

Now this might be best put in the "worthless information" category, but when I get a "discarded" MIJ set (or MIT, for that matter) that I completely "refurbish" and recover for resale, I usually move the breather hole (fill in the old and redrill a new) to the top and in the center of the drum. I guess I'm probably a little OCD that way, but like the continuity...

Bill, I understand completely! I move my badges so they face the audience. I even line up the emblem on my heads with the badge on all of the drums. I have a tape measure in my drum bag to make sure my tom legs are EXACTLY the right distance from the floor. My bass must be elevated precisely as well. I won't even get into cymbal placement. I won't bore you with every day OCD rituals. Maybe it has something to do with drummers having to count and be as exact as humanly possible. I don't know. Thanks for the reply, Bill. Glad I'm not alone.

Hey Brian... I think we've had this OCD conversation on here before, because I remember just about every detail you mention! :)

And, if I remember correctly, several other members chimed in as well... so, no, we're not alone!

But let's not forget that in the 80's on the M.I.J. and M.I.T. set's had the grommet at the bottom of the bass drum.Badge's were on top.....Mikey
