Leedy re-wrap

Loading...

It's funny how we drummers (myself included)agonize and lose sleep over how one WMP drum doesn't match another etc.The audience, except for the other super critical drummers, don't give a rats a$$-play those vintage drums! And when the drummers complain, tell them to go play their perfectly matching Ludwig Accents!

From wacahoota

I paid too much for the kit in the first place. The Leedy name, 28" bd, and trap rail sucked me in. I will never break even. Expensive lesson for this novice. The Precision wrap just needs some yellowing to be close the the bd.

I know how you feel. Like a few others have said, it's hard to sell a re-wrap. BUT the same person who messages you on eBay complaining that the small faded area, or the small split, or the crack, etc. makes your kit worth 1/3 to 1/2 less expensive, is the same person who messages you and says your re-wraps are worth the same amount.

I talked to a couple guys about my Mod Orange Luddy when I was very timidly thinking of selling it. They said that I would only be able to get about what I paid for them (which wasn't much, got a steal!) since the purple was all but gone from the wrap, and that there were some small splits on the wrap. Oh sure, maybe I should have offered less or bought the OTHER Mod Orange kit that was right next to it. DOH The Mod Orange is the same as the Leedy and some of the other kits out there. There aren't 100 on ebay every day like some of the pearls or sparkles. If you want it, you'll buy it for whatever price unless it's astronomical.

You say the big kick and rail sucked you in. Awesome, then you got a kit you'll love forever. If there's another person out there like you (and there probably is a similar person!) then you can probably sell it in the future.

I say all that to say this, I feel like as time goes buy people are going to have to ease up on re-wraps and/or fades and splits. I feel like there are really bad ways to do re-wraps and really good ways to do re wraps. Using era correct grommets (and the same color people!), not doing the tape thing, etc. If you take your time and do the research and the hard work, your kit should only be slightly less "valuable" then it was. Vice versa, if it's a Mod, Psychedelic, Fiesta, whatever wrap, then there are gonna be some splits, fades, etc. If they are bad enough and the color isn't that rare, i.e. your WMP, then I feel a re-wrap is in order and it shouldn't make a re-wrapped kit less than the value of naked shells with the hardware in a zip lock bag, which I have seen many times on eBay. Sorry to be so long winded!

I appreciate the support and encouragement. I am too wrapped up in putting together a vintage kit, and not concentrating on learning to play. I have vowed to stay off ebay for a while and practice rudiments and triplets, etc, and play along with some good jazz. Stay tuned for photos of rewrapped toms.

Thanks again. This is a great forum.

More photos. The rewraps came out OK. I have a couple of trap rail cymbal mounts. Were 1940s Leedy cymbal arms 1/4" in diameter? Modern arms are too big.

The blue pearl snare is a 6.5 X 15 Vespe. Strainer and butt are WFL. Lugs look WFL. Badge has been replaced with Vespe. Peter Vespe has some patents on cocktail drums. Any ideas on the snare? Will try to send some photos. Thanks
