1965 WMP Trixon Telstars...Recover or Not?

That is a very cool kit. I am generally one of the first (and often only) person on this site to be on the side of re-wrapping, however, I would absolutely leave this kit as is. A really good cleaning and she will make you proud!

yup!! I agree with the consensus. I will just clean and shine them up.

Will also post pics when done.

My only problem now is do I try to remove the lugs or clean and polish it with the lugs on? If I try to remove them, and some of the screws break off, I might not be able to get them out of the lug if the shaft is too short. Then I'd have to replace those lugs, which is hard with Trixon drums because lugs are hard to find.

Tough decision here.

There is sometimes ,salting between the lug bolts and the lug threads on Trixon. It does make the bolts hard to remove without , either stripping the thread or pulling the the threaded boss right off of the lug.

The bolt heads are metric, so make sure you have a correct wrench or socket. They are 7mm or 9/32" is very close if you use a 6 point. Don't use a 12 point box end , a 6 point socket is best. I like using a 1/4" drive stubby ratchet but a standard ratchet is o.k. too.

Usually a very small amount of torque will loosen the bolt. If it doesn't, don't force it. Loosen as many as you can with limited torque. You may have to sacrifice one by reefing a bit on it but that will tell you how much torque to give. The experience helps. Most of them will be o.k., unless the drum has been in a garage or somewhere where the temperature in spring rises dramatically and causes condensation on metal parts.

Here is the important part. As you back off the bolts , some of them may start getting tighter, rather than looser. This is because there is a small amount of salting in the threads and it is beginning to pack up. For every one of these that does this, every one probably is best, turn the drum so the offending bolt is at the bottom and introduce a small amount of penetrating oil or WD 40 into the space between the flat washer and the hole in the shell, right at the shaft of the bolt. Most of the bolts that get like this will have been backed off enough to allow enough relief for one of those little WD 40 plastic nozzles to slip in there. Give it some time to penetrate---maybe 2 or 3 minutes then try tightening and loosening the\bolt back and forth. Most ot them should free up well.

I don't mind telling you; there are some smart people on this forum! Geez Calfskin, that is worth the price of admission right there!

Trixon Update:

I've started the restoration on the bass drum, the hardest drum to do because off the insane amount of hardware on the shell. Only one lug gave me a problem.....the screw snapped. I have ordered all new hex head screws for when I rebuild the drum. The old ones are in bad shape.

All Hardware has been removed and cleaned with Dawn detergent.....it really does a heck of a good job. I'm going to polish with simichrome.

The wrap has been cleaned with dawn, the cleaned with Meguires, and then polished with Meguires. The yellowing didnt change, but the wrap is nice and shiny now. Looks great!!

I hope to have all the hardware back on the shell sometime this week.

After that, its "Floor Tom Time"!!! Whew.

I think my Trixon Telstars are going to look really nice when I'm done. I also have matching cannister throne, Hi Hat stand, snare stand. Its 1965 all over again.

I've actually found out who the original owner of my set was, and he;s still around. Had them shipped from Germany to his house in 1965!

>>Wow..would be great to get the additional history on the kit..Looking forward to seeing the Telstar back together..great you have the matching snare drum as these are often sold on their own and parted from the kit. You can easily get any parts for these unusual kits, really like the WMP my friend (glad you didnt re-wrap it) and as mentioned previously they often discolour as do a lot of the sparkle wraps in time. Novus can sometimes help also but sounds like you have it under control..

Hi Diamond.

Thanks!! Did some more work on it very early this morning. Hope to get to some tonight as well.

From what I researched, nothing will bring the wrap back to to shiny WMP, but its nice and shiny now, so I'm fairly happy with it. The hardware looks GREAT, like the day it came out of the factory, with just a few dings here and there.

I do need a few Trixon Tension screws with the slotted head and a few lugs if you have any for sale.

Hi Mate..

once gone its very hard to get it back, but like you say the shine has now surfaced so that is great and also the hardware looking great is an added bonus my friend.

Unfortunately i've just used all my tension screws and lugs after a new project but i got mine from Ingo at www.trixondrums.de ..and http://www.trixondrums.de/trixon/trixon6i.htm#hardware are 1-2 euros and 3-5 so pretty good deal..You could also register your kit on the site too..

You definately have a great kit there and congrats again
