Leedy re-wrap

Loading...

I acquired a 3-pc Leedy from 1940/41 (at least the 2 toms are stamped). The wmp wrap on the toms was is very bad shape. I ended up removing. The BD wrap on the other hand was in good shape, only very faded. I think I may broken all the rules for vintage drums when I used chemicals to clean (or should I say, remove the upper layer). However, it looks pretty good. My question; I have ordered some antique wmp from Precision to re-wrap the toms. The antique wrap is still a bit lighter that the BD. Is there a method to artificially age the new wrap? Place in direct sunlight for a period of time? Cover with light coat of varnish to impart a slight yellowing? Open to suggestions. Thanks

I asked that question to Sam Bernard (jammin sams) and he said no. Why not rewrap all of the drums? Got pics?

Jeff,

Rewrapping all was always an option. Adding the expense of rewrapping the BD (28") would make total rewrap cost about $400-500. Ouch. Unfortunately, I do not have any "before" photos. I am not sure whether I will keep this kit. I do not have the $$ or space to collect, so, I either keep these or my 50s/60s Slingerlands. If I could get a good deal on a vintage Leedy 6.5 X 14 wmp snare, I may keep.

the wrap you ordered will not match the original wmp LEEDY wrap. re wrapped leedy kits don't sale well. you'll maybe get your investment back.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Tim, I understand the money factor here for sure. That wrap is expensive. Maybe when you get the toms done you can play them while you think about it more and save money for the bass drum. Then again you might just get use to them with out doing the bass drum. Anyway, show us some pics of what you have going, we would love to see them!

I paid too much for the kit in the first place. The Leedy name, 28" bd, and trap rail sucked me in. I will never break even. Expensive lesson for this novice.

The Precision wrap just needs some yellowing to be close the the bd.

Well there are guys that claim there is a way to yellow the wrap so maybe they are right. I hope one of those guys will chime in for you.

Yeah, yeah, of course you MUST hear that the kit is almost worthless, now that you have re-wrapped it. However, I don´t think it was worth any more with heavy splits in the original wrap....so remain satisfied with your work. If done properly, you have done the kit a huge favour in my book.

I haven´t tried it - but I´d guess that laqcuering the newer coating with a good polyurethane without too much UV-protection will do the trick - at least after some time.

There is no guarantee, that it will yellow in the same manner as the old, though.

But trying on a small piece of surplus material from the re-wrap, and letting it be exposed to heavy sunlight for a while will give you a good idea. You should be able to accelerate the yellowing quite a bit, as drumkits normally doesn´t get much direct sun....

Here are photos of cleaned BD wrap and refinished hoops with new insert. Offers a good comparison of old and new wrap.
