Royal Star kit

Loading...

Hi all,

i was looking for a nice looking (/sounding) practice kit and bumped into this Royal Star kit.

it's a 12, 13, 16, 22 configuration from the mid sixties in what looks to me like a walnut wrap!?

if anyone knows the name of the wrap, please share ;)

also, what is the link between Royal Star and Star??

i guess they are both pre-tama wright?

Now, there's only one thing really missing on the kit and that are the screws to hold the toms in place on the mounts. Does anyone have a pic of how they look?

with the kit came a '65 slingerland sound king in very good condition, sounds incredible!

and just out of curiosity, what do those snare fetch these days?? :p

church basements, got to love them!!! LoLoLoLo

anyway,

thanks!

D.

Hi,Photos of the tom mount on the toms will tell me..If its a diamond shape mount you are missing the short T-rods they look like a t-rod on the drums not T-screws wing nut's.. these are metric threads...Mikey

Thanks for the reaction,

it's not a diamond shaped mount...

the mount on the tom slides over the first part of the rail mount for an inch or so.

I'll post pics later today ;)

Please do but i think iam sure of what piece you need,is your mount mounted by three screws? and has a round middle piece in the middle with about a 1/2hole and the tom mount from the bass drum has a hex shape rod that is rounded at the end that would go into the tom mount?..If you what you are missing is the short T-rod that you used a drum key to tightin on the tom with..They are about 1/2" long ....Mikey

Mikey,

you are a true magician!!

that is exactly how it looks!

i thought you were refering to the spade style mounts, my bad Toilet

so what i need looks like a normal t-rod, about 1/2" long, with a metric tread and a regular diameter??

thank you very much!!!

you are great!! ;)

So, i found some t-rods that fit.

Thanks Mikey!

Can anyone tell me some more about the connection between Star and Royal Star??

Where they two different co-existing brands or was one brand a branch of the other?? (Like with premier and olympic)

Thanks

Thanks again,

I was already thinking in that direction.

This kit has a 10 lug bassdrum, haven't seen a lot of those with Star :p

Great, looks like i found myself an enjoyable kit. Some cleaning up, and it's ready to go!!

greets

Hello,

The wrap might be called 'Rose wood grain'. It's the first time that I see a STAR drumset with a genuine wooden finish. Guess, they're pretty rare with this wood surface (unless your drums are - much later - wrapped by a drummer with an additional plastiv adhesive foil?).

The black-golden 'Royal Star' badge was the first/ earlier of two versions of 'Royal Star' badges from Star (the other one was a round silver one) during their short era between 1961 - 1973. Your badge dates the set to very late 60s to early 70s.

Can you give us some information about the inside of the shells (painted in grey or not, with/ without rerings etc.), please?

Ralf

NB:

You should find a pic of the genuine tom mount here, in TAMA's catalogues:

Hi Ralf,

thanks for the info! it's a great help!!

the interiors of the drums do indeed have a grey coating but no re-rings.

there is nothing that clearly indicates it would be a rewrap, but i haven't really checked it yet...

it appears the kit i have, was called 'golden tone' and the wrap may well be the 'rose wood grain' although mine looks darker than the one in the catalog.

thanks

D.
