ROGERS Holiday snare-throw mechanism: What am I missing?

Loading...

I am trying to restore a Rogers Holiday snare drum from the early '60's, I believe. The snare-throw I have is missing the lever, one of the screws that holds the face to the back, and the plate and its 2 screws that hold the string tight. I have searched for pics or drawings of the mechanism in pieces to find out if I am missing any other parts, but to no avail. I have attached pics of what I have both together, and in pieces. Can anyone tell if I am missing any other parts to this mechanism? I appreciate any help.

I haven't taken one of these apart in a while, but I believe there is a brass collar that goes on the lever stud, in order to help it move up & down in the channel. This collar is also important for the stud to fit the space properly. Hopefully, someone who has recently disassembled one can clarify this.

You are missing only the lever. The lever has a small bearing attached to it, it's not a separate part.

Hard to find a lever by itself, for some reason it's a common part to be missing.

The pinch-plate, on the bottom, is used to hold the strings. It is an impossible part to find by itself. I have made one or two from a blank piece of metal in the past, out of necessity.

Sometimes an incomplete clockface strainer, having the part(s) needed, will come along on eBay. But it is usually a long wait for that to happen.

Fortunately, there are a few other Rogers strainers that will fit the same holes: the updated 'square-side' strainer that followed the Clockface will fit, as well as the Statite and Bantam strainers (from the Tower and Luxor snares, respectively). Any of these are easy to find, fit perfectly, look good and work well. And they will make that long wait a little easier to take. ;)

DanC, thanks for the information and your advice on cutting down my wait time. I had not thought of those options. Perhaps all the missing levers are in the same place as missing socks from the dryer!

Thank you, Mikey, for your response and checking on the lever for me.

I guess another option regarding the missing pinch plate would be to just run the string through the holes and tie it. Would I be cast into the pit for doing that? The original WMP wrap on this drum was stripped off long ago (I am planning on rewrapping it) so it is not of value as a collector, but the shell is in great shape.

Thanks guys!

Besides the lever, you might also be missing the stepped screw that the lever pivots on. You need to remove the slide plate to see if that screw is there. During a standard overhaul, the screw has to be removed to physically remove the lever. If your lever is missing, that screw is probably MIA as well.

Thanks, idrum4fun, for the info. Looks like I am missing that screw also. I see nothing that fits that description with what I have. I appreciate the heads-up.
