Really nice kit! I didn't know they made the "Stage Band" in those sizes. What size is that floor tom and how does it sound?

NICE! I would have guessed the FT is a 12 x 15. Slingerland also made some 16" floor toms with a 14" depth. (They ALSO made some 14" diameter, 16" deep.)

I've seen stage band style 12 x 15s and 14 x 14s, but never a 16. Very cool.

GREAT LOOKING kit! It reminds me a little of my 1963 Ludwig Club Date outfit which also has the hoop-mounted tom clamp.

[COLOR="DarkRed"]I know from reading some about the Slingerland factory...they had a tendency to just make a bunch of shells in 14, 15, 16 inch diameters without necessarily having a plan for them. As a result, you get the odd kit with something like this....or a 12x14 FT instead of the typical 14x14.

Another thing which pops up from time to time....if the FT has a shallower depth than usual, sometimes it will also have snare beds cut into the bottom. This is because most of those shells became marching drums, but a few they pulled out of stock to finish up trapsets. Seriously...these FT's will have snare beds, but nary a sign of any strainer/throw holes or buttside holes....because they were never drilled for that until later in the assembly process.

Yes, Luddy had a similar hoop mount....I have some of those in my hardware stash. This one, you have to crank the sh#t out of the thumbscrew to get the tom to stay in place...probaby works better w/ a 12" rack as opposed to a 13". But it is pretty invisible from a lotta angles...which I like.[/COLOR]

I have a 5 piece Slingerland set that I am trying to determine a date on. The toms and bass lugs are identical to the ones on this set. The lug is positioned in the center of the drum and accepts tension rods from both ends.

I haven't seen too many Slingerland sets (other than snares of course) that use this type of lug. Do you have any idea what years Slingerland may have used them?

My floor tom with the set is a 16wide x 14deep by the way. I'll have to check for snare beds.

That picture you posted of the hoop mount is the kind of mount I think was installed on my 66 pink sparkle set. When I bought it it had already been changed to a Ludwig rail mount with a Ludwig tom mount, the kind that uses the L rod. I am thinking about bringing it back to its original state. Have any extra tom mounts in your stash?

[COLOR="DarkRed"]That style was produced by Slingy for a long time...from the '50's up until the '70's.

here's a quicker way to determine: post the badge types and serial #'s here (if the badges have serial #'s).

Is the badge:

1) Black and Gold ? if so, does it say Chicago or Niles ?

2) If Black and Gold Niles, does it have a serial # ?

3) or Black and Silver ? If so, what is serial # ?

We can get it down to w/i a few years with badge info.
