Orange drums?

Loading...

I was looking through the memorabilia gallery, and came across an ad for Orange drums. Anybody know if they were any good? Their amps are top notch, so they have a reputation for quality stuff. Could it be that they were actually made at the Premier factory, and released under the Orange moniker?

Just curious.

Orange drums were made in France by Jaques Capelle company. I'm told that they are very good drums. Never owned any of the drums, but I do own one of their pedals. Interesting pedal, and very smooth action, so if that's any indication of their drums.....

So it's not the same company as the English amp makers. Makes sense. I thought it odd that they would make or brand drums. Thanks for clearing that up.

Well....it is, and it isn't. The owner of Orange Amps back in the 70's was looking to expand his product line into drums as well as amps and guitars. Rather than make his own, he imported Capelle from France and stuck his own name of Orange on them (with permission from Capelle of course) So, they are from the same company, but manufactured by Capelle.

So it was branded by Orange. I thought the logo looked the same. Obviously they didn't take off, as that was the first I'd heard of them. I'll bet they're rarer than hens teeth.

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.

OT..

I saw FZ and the Mothers in around 1970 here at a church (!),and first thing..

Out came 1 Orange amp after another until the entire stage was filled with them end to end!

Ansley Dunbar would have been the drummer too!

Didn't know who he was at the time...

I'll bet that was a great show. I would have been twelve, and not yet into eclectic music. I'm glad I discovered all this stuff as I got older. Side note: I just saw the Led Zeppelin reunion movie, and Jimmy Page had a nice stack of Orange amps amongst his arsenal, which looked like it included Marshall and Hi-Watt. The movie is coming out on DVD, so if you're into LZ, it's a must have. The performances were sublime, and Jason Bonham was playing an amber Ludwig kit, just like his dad's.

OT again...

Stephen,

I was only 14 at the time....

Concerts were $3.50 at this church..

The Byrds,Steppenwolf,John Mayall,U2,Iron Butterfly,King Crimson,Lou Reed,Moody Blues and more all played there

FZ played "***** Dimensions" in the church!

He prefaced it with...

"you don't hear the word ***** mentioned in a church very often.......

long pause...

.....and thats why the world is so F'd" up!

People used to smoke herb during concerts there and more!

Back to our regular programming......

Ha! Someone always manages to smoke weed at concerts, even in these days of rigid anti-smoking regulations. I saw Jack White about a month ago at the Fox Theater here in Atlanta (beautiful, ornate and classic building), and sure enough two or three songs in I smelled pot. If it had been a cigarette, they would have been tossed in a heartbeat.

I have an Orange drum kit - as said, made by Capelle. Thick layers of african mahogany (NOT lauan!), very nice hardware with a touch of french racing bicycle anno 1975....

Before I checked it up:

22x14, 12x8, 13x9 and 16x16".

The kit was in lovely condition, only needed a clean and fresh heads. The coating is formica, like used for kitchen tables - rockhard, though prone to fading in the sun. Faded orange is yucky!

They also came in at least white and black.

18" floortoms came with 9 holes. Unpractical if you need a new one....
