Phenolic Shells Saga Continues

Loading...

I started researching phenolic shells and within a few months two sets pop up that need restoration. I cleaned and assembled the first set adding the snare from the 2nd set just to see what they sound like. Suprising. They tune easily and are light as a feather. And loud! The whole set in the photo, including stands, weighs 61 pounds.

The second photo shows a close-up of the bass drum which has been modified by the Acme Whackme Drum Co. I have marked what I believe to be original holes. The drum originally had a 1969 Gold Oyster Pearl wrap. I sure would appreciate input from the drum gurus regarding the holes. Thanks again.

BTW. Hat tip to jccabinets, billnvick and Mikey777 for their help in identifying these drums.

Regards, Jim

Hi Jim, On the holes..i will try to word it so you can understand what iam talking about.First the big round hole and ALL of the holes around it are all added to the drum. The next big hole that is not rounded is the right hole for the tom mount, the tom mount that was on the drum was a diamond shape mounts and it looks like someone drilled the holes out bigger than the original ones-{i have the tom mount that should be on the drum}- i can post a photo of it to show you the mount.. the yeo holes under the lugs were for cymbal "L" arm mounts the one on the left is original the one on the right looks to be added to the drum.....Mikey

Thanks Mikey. The second set I have sports the triangle mount but I was thinking the bass drum might have the mounts shown in the attached photo. The breather hole seems to be in the correct location as well as the cymbal mount holes on the drummer's right. I want to restore this drum correctly and appreciate any advice I can get from the group. Thanks. Jim

Jim,after going over your photos agian.Yes the holes you marked on the second photo are the right holes to used. The bass drum had a rail mount and "L" arm the grommet hole is right to me.Why would someone make so many extra holes in a drum...Anyway if you are looking for the Pearl rail mount complete i have one also the mount for the "L" arm too.Does the "L" arm mount on the other set have Pearl on it? Pearl used a few type's of these mounts, your floor tom leg mounts could also say Pearl on them..Oh Pearl did two types of tom mounts on these set's a rail mount and a diamond shape mount with a hex rod that went into the mounted tom....Mikey

Thanks Mikey. I appreciate you taking the time to help. Did a little more research and was able to get PDF copies of 1968 and 1969 Pearl catalogs. The attached photos shows the two bass drums I've been blessed with.

Bass1 is a 22" 10-lug bass (1968), Bass2 is a 20" 8-lug bass (1969) and these are consistent with the catalogs. The tom mount changed to hex rod configuration in 1969. The bass leg mounts say Pearl the L-arm cymbal mount does not. Slowly but surely.
