1984 Ludwig Value

Loading...

Hi,

I know 1984 isn´t exactly what is called vintage, nevertheless my preferred year of make of Ludwig drums. (Just because that was the time I bought mine).

Just thinking about ordering a replica from that era - in silver sparkle.

Maybe classic `Bonzo´ sizes.

On the other hand I still hold on to my old set in a classic marple finish, which can be re-wrapped. (never liked the finish, but it was on sale back in the days)

So would you call that butching an vintage set?

Can anyone advise what it might be worth in the original condition (good nick, no damage, no scratches, almost never gigged; 24", 8", 10", 13", 16", 18"), the floortoms are suspended on an original Atlas stand.

I would really appreciate an experts opinion about what´s best to do.

OH yeah, that would be butchering a perfectly good set with a good finish. I might suggest selling it and getting what you want instead.

Am I to assume it is Concert toms? (single headed) As you said the "floor toms" were on a stand. Usually (there are exceptions) floor toms are legged and double headed.

Unfortunately Concert toms are not quite as valuable as Classic (double headed) toms and won't bring quite as nice a selling price. But if at least the 13, 16 18 and 24 are double headed in Maple they should do pretty well as a sale item.

Well, thats excactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.

So, I will keep my old set like it is and just order everything as wanted/desired.

Any opinions on those replica sets?

The manufacturer uses keller shells, 6 ply, 8 ply, 10 ply and 12 ply marple.

The 1984 sound should be right there, but it will be a brand-new set, although the looks will be 1984.

Is that the same like with the old/new Mini Cooper?

For me it will be just another great sounding Ludwig kit from that era, but always keeping its background in mind.

But I am interested how that issue is perceived generally.

Sorry, forgotten to reply to the second part.

No the are all double sided power toms.

Even the suspended floortoms – which are actually no floortoms but just oversized toms.

Ahhh, yes, that's the exception I was talking about. Then really, it IS a cool kit, even as a 1980's vintage. I own a 1980's vintage kit in Black Cortex 8, 10, 12, 13, 16, 22. It's KILLER sounding. Some say the 80's stuff wasn't as good, but I don't hear it. Those 6 ply Ludwig shells are HEAVY but they sure do sound good.

If you want to check out some new drums that really capture the spirit of the OLD ones, check out the Ludwig Legacy line of drums. They've really captured the sound and construction of the Ludwigs of the 1960's
