1964 Premier

My father bought this set in 1964 when he was 15 years old. He falsified granddads signature on a paymentplan and bought it while granddad was away working in a nearby town. Bowing

Thsis set has been stashed away in a garage for 25 some years and this year I asked if I could have it and restore it to its former glory.

My dad happily agreed and here is the end result. All the drums has been recovered with Delmar Red Sparkle, the same color as original. ALl metal items has been removed, cleaned, oiled and polished.

The set is all pre international sizes except for the snare. The sizes mentioned are the nearest equivalent in standard size.

Ludwig Supraphonic 400 (5"x14") snare drum.

14"x20" bass drum

15"x16" floor tom

8"x12" tomtom

Yes, that puzzeled me too. I asked my father and he says it came with the set when he bought it in the music store. Maybe some kind of sales drive where the store upgraded kits to sell more? Anyway, it was included in the set.

Nice kit and a cool story !!

But it's very suprising about international sizes in that Premiers time - I've had a fully analogical set borned 1967 --- rack tom 11.7/8" and floor tom 16.5/16"... BD was 22".

Sweet kit!

Premier in the mid 60's was transitioning to standard size shells, as were other European makers. It's not unusual to find kits that reflect this transition. Premier used up all their old inventory during this time (which is why you rarely find left over stock parts for older kits). So to have a kit with standard shells (new) mixed with older lugs (Art Deco I), new lugs (Art Deco II) and new mounts (as in your picture) is the result. No two kits of this period turned out the same, until old stock was used up, which would be as late as 1968 or so.

A lot of great info there. I am looking at the 1963 catalogue and there indeed it says that the tom mount is the "new disappearing" type. The part fitted to the bass drum is three-sided to make it possible to have two toms side by side. How modern...Cool Dude

Also the stands look exactly like in the catalogue with model 301 snare drum stand, model 304 cymbal stands and model 289 hihatstand.

The throne is a model 245 and the bass drum pedal is the original model 250 with lambs wool and leather.

I also have a pair of bongos (like 6" and 8") that has never been used. Trying to find heads for those and also the stand and connecting rods. (now there´s a challenge!)

If I was rich I would make restoring drums my job.:D It´s a lot of fun to go back and work with a piece of history like that.
