Slingerland "super Radio King"?

Loading...

I've been spending some time (not enough!) during the Holiday break cataloging some of my vintage snares. I'm trying to confirm the fact that the drum that I've provided a few pics of is, in fact, a Slingerland "Super Radio King."

It's in a 14x8 configuration, with 16 Super Streamlined lugs, a Super (Clamshell) Strainer, Aluminum Cloud Badge, Engraved Stick-Chopper Hoops and Harold R. Dodd muffler system.

I'm trying to obtain as much ACCURATE information concerning this particular drum as possible so that I can include it in my cataloging process. Any and all information would be GREATLY appreciated. In particular, though, I'd really like to get an accurate description of the shell itself.

I'm sure that upon my "demise" my two children will thank you all dearly for the help you've provided "the old man!"

THANKS!Excited

It is weird because 2 minutes before I read this I stumbled upon a near identical snare on ebay right now.

classified just as a Radio king, but it could be a Super, I'm not familiar with Slingerland all too much

MichaelSJ: Thanks for the feedback. I saw that one, too. I also noticed a few minor differences between the one being offered by Ms. Willoughby and the one I've got:

* Mine's got the Aluminum Cloud Badge (1st Version), which would date it somewhere between 1944-1945;

* Mine includes the lever with the clamshell strainer, which hers is missing; and

* The original Black Diamond Pearl finish on mine doesn't have any chipping or cracking.

I only wish this piece was worth anywhere "in the ballpark" from what she's asking!

Mike:

First, let me thank you for taking the time to look at my posting. I purchased your book, "Vintage Snare Drums - The Curotto Collection" (1900 - 1940s) some time ago and have truly enjoyed the information and incredible pictures presented. It's become one of the main conversation pieces in my music room.

In regard to the Radio King, could you please provide some information concerning the shell? I'm also wondering what you (as a vintage drum expert) would consider fair market value for this one?

THANKS AGAIN for your time and feedback and HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and your family!

What is it that makes it "super"? the 8" depth? I have a WMP RK that looks alot like this but is 7" and has a brass cloud badge.

From what I've been researching, the Clamshell strainer was also known as the "SUPER Strainer." Also, the small beavertail lugs were originally known as "SUPER" lugs. I'm certainly open to any and all additional input regarding this one.

THANKS!

Well my WMP has the clamshell and the small lugs. I have another RK that is 7" and has the small lugs, but a 3 point strainer. When I got this drum the wrap had been stripped and there was no badge. A friend gave me an aluuminum badgefor it. I stained the shell a dark brown and clear coated it. So I guess I have a super and a half super.

I have this exact drum, not the covering, however. I purchased it just as a shell years ago. 8" deep, and it had some half-assed paint job over it. Well, since it was already "ruined" having been painted (I mean ruined from retaining the authentic look) I sanded it down and found a beautiful birdseye Maple finish. However, I do not have the clamshel strainer. I need to ask a few people about that in another post.
