Crescent cymbals

I must be getting slow. I only just discovered that Jeff Hamilton and Stanton Moore are no longer associated as American distributors of Bosphorus cymbals. They have partnered in what, to me anyway, is a new company called Cresscent Cymbals, http://www.crescentcymbals.com/.

Here is the announcement from Stanton Moore's forum on his website: http://www.stantonmoore.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1557. According to Stanton Moore they are handmade in Istanbul, but curiously the Crescent website seems to go out of its way to avoid using the words "Istanbul", "Turkey", or Hand-made" anywhere. Strange.

Some posts I've read elsewhere also imply that Bosphorus may be having lots of difficulties. On the Borphorus website they say they have a new distributor and got rid of their previous one (Jeff Hamilton and company) due to poor distribution.

While not vintage cymbal related, I figured that a new Istanbul based maker of hand-made cymbals would be of interest.

This could be either good news or bad news. A quality hand hammered genuine Turkish cymbal is always going to be of interest----- but as we know from history, there can be too many of them in a very tight market. Turkey, sees the maintenance of what they consider to be their gift to music as of a very high priority, so they offer assistance to those companies who can help maintain that visibility on the world stage. Even Meinl, the doyen of computerised absolutely consistent cymbal making is in on the act----who would have thunk that ,back in the 90's.

The fact, that rumours of Bosphorus being on the slide are out there ,can't be a good thing, in the overall picture.

Tony Costello is handling the US distribution I believe. At the least he is continuing to offer them with his excellent sound files:

http://cymbalsonly.com/cymbals/Bos/bos.htm

The New Orleans series was dropped by the US distributors, but was a continuing series elsewhere in the world. This may turn out to be a good thing if you like some of the other series which went extinct in just the USA. They may now come back.

Unfortunately the divorce was messy and unpleasant things have been said in public.

Yeah, from what little I've read so far this looks to be very messy. But where did this new cymbal company come from? Who's actually making the cymbals? Some of the models look similar to Borphorus models. And why would their new website omit any reference to "Istanbul", "Turkey", or Hand-made", especially when Stanton Moore specifically indicated they were handmade in Turkey?

Well, they sort of say "hand made in Turkey" using different words:

If I were guessing, I would say that they are using the standard marketing approaches of (1) never directly name the competition, and (2) create a unique point of difference...

If it's from the confluence of the Tigres and the Uphrates then it isn't just another Turkish brand. But this is all just fertile ground for speculation as to why they chose the wording they did.

There is a one to one correspondence between the old Bos series and the new Crescent series. Only the names have been changed by the look of things. The old endorser series are there with different names, etc. Well, not Rikki Rocket.

I read it too, but its vague as if they're trying to imply something without actually committing to it. Maybe they are just trying to wax poetic so their venture sounds more mystical and artistic, and romantic. And maybe they are made in Turkey, but just not in Istanbul. That could account for it.

AMEDIA is known to make cymbals for a variety of "Turkish" style labels.

Never play it the same way once.

Crescent Cymbals are made by the former Imperial Cymbal Company, Istanbul, Turkey.

Michael Vosbin, owner of Bosphorus USA had Imperial private label cymbals for his new company, Crescent, following a fallout with Bosphorus resulting in a breakup of the USA distribution.

Crescent has since purchased Imperial Cymbals, and now the Imperial foundry in Turkey produces Crescent exclusively under the Crescent Cymbal flag.

Crescent USA is the same location as the former Bosphorus USA on Royal Ind Blvd, Kennesaw, GA
