Question/Opinion Time. I'll go first:
What do you think are the most typical sizes and configurations for MIJ kits?
I'm talking about vintage stuff and non-specialty drums (such as child size kits, etc.)
20" by far seems to be the most common size bass drum. I don't see very many 22's and very rarely ever see an 18".
As far as toms go, I don't think I have ever seen a 10". They might be out there, but they are rare. 12" and 13" are common rack tom sizes, with 14" and 16" being common floor tom sizes. On 4 piece kits, the 12" and 14" are usually a pair, and the 13" and 16" are usually a pair. However, I have a Gracy kit that has a 13" Rack and 14" Floor, so that wasn't always the case. I don't recall ever seeing a 15" floor tom.
I can't say I have ever seen anything other than a 14" snare (of varying depths). Again, 13's and 15's might be out there, but I have yet to see them.
If I had to pick one, I would say a "Classic" MIJ kit would be a 4 piece sized 12"/14"/20"/14"SD, but of course there are certainly variations.
What do you say?
