slingy rings like a bell!

Loading...

hi yall, nice feel to this forum so i thought i'd join!

also start with a question, just bought a slingerland 5" by 14" artist solid maple snare drum around 1964 by badge/serial no.

my problem is its really ringing even when moon gel's applied, took possession of a drum dial thinking that all would be well, when I know that it's tuned equally but if anything it seems worse!

remo ambassador/diplomat skins fairly new, also removed tone armature as i thought this might be the culprit, but alas no.

ideas? thoughts? any help mucho appreciated as a returning drummer trying to find my feet

regards nick

My first thought would be that you don't have the batter head tight enough. My second thought is don't be afraid of ring....its a good thing.

I tune my snare drums until the center 4-6 inches is controlled sounding with very little ring at low snare wire tension. The outer portion of the snare should have some ring in my opinion. Once I get it where I want it, then I can add a bit of moongel or crank up the snare wire tension to deaden that inner area a bit further if necessary. That's pretty much my tuning method with all my snares.

Cranking it up higher than that or excessively tightening the snare wires will choke the sound of the drum and you will lose body, volume and projection of the drum. Also, on vintage drums, you risk damaging the lugs with really high tensions.

Just a few idea's from my side of the fence. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

I think the reason many folks like the solid shell drums is for the "ring"...heavy muffling would just change the sound. I'm no scientist, but the dense, solid shell would seem to be highly reflective and give the drum that sound.

Try ambassador snare side instead of the diplomat.

I have a lot of old Slingerland snares, but prefer the 3 ply ones to the solid shell ones.

Hi Rich K,

To reduce some of that ring, try a Remo Controlled Sound reverse balck dot and an Emperor snare side. Also you could then thrown on a studio ring to fatten attack and reduce ring. I know that ring is a form of resonance, so you don't want to get rid of all the ring. Also, tightening the snare wires should suppress the resonance on the bottom head a little more to control some of that ring. Oh, if your playing your snare drum inside, the acoustics could make it seem as though there is too much ring. I know this from experience, I was used to playing my snare in the garage where it could disperse and the frequencies would be absorbed, then brought it in my room to play and it sounded like a different snare!

I'm thinking with that statement that you have a sympathetic vibration going on?? Not the "ringing" from the drumhead per'se but an after ring that sounds after the drum should be quiet?

I might suggest that the springs inside the lugs might need dampening. They will sing pretty well if there is nothing in them to control them.

If there is nothing in the lugs to muffle the springs, put about 1/2 of a cotton ball behind the spring (behind the spring keeps it in place so you can re-mount the lugs without the cotton falling out) and if that's the problem you will most likely be all set.

I HOPE that's what you mean, if not, well, I tried . . .

Wasn't me who wanted to reduce the ring!

Hello dera chap and welcome!

Have you tried Evans? They have a range of heads for snare, one of which i might presume to suggest would be their Genera dry.It is 10mm thick single ply with what they term as sound control holes around the edge of the head. These are also in evidence with some of their bass drum heads, and when lined up with the tension rods, eliminate quite a bit of that ring for you.

I have used them myself in the past but of late i have prefered to let the drums ring out.Anyway,i need the ring to combat the LOUD guitar3!

A very merry Christmas to you:D

wow so much advice! excellent!

thanx to jones the drum, rich k, jazz drummer chris, vipecussionist, the drum dad, cheers guys fo the response/welcome.

1st off ,I don't want to crank the drum, I know it's not that kind of drum, i want it to sing!

also i play (at the moment) in a converted garage, so there is no external ring at all everythings damped down, if anything it's slightly the other way!

Got a set of evans genera on my trusty ludwig ss so might try that route, also i was thinking new snare wires maybe puresound?

it's also got that zoomatic thing where it tightens so far(not very) then goes ping and seems to start to wind up again, will look at that .

I think vipercussionist hit the nail on t' head its not an 'attractive' ring

which i quite like but a pervasive 4 second doooooooingg kind of thing

well you guys have given me a fair bit to chew on, thanks ever so for the advice, welcome

keep on rockin in the free world or jazzin or funkin or rollin orD' Drummer
