Slingerland wrap warping

Loading...

I have the chance to buy a 1950's slingerland set but the chrome is pitted on some of the lugs and the wrap is warped and separating. Is there any way to repair the wrapping?

Also the floor tom vent is behind the leg and the mounted tom has no vent or badge. Is this common in the 50's slingerland sets?

Lets see some pics of that wrap. Slingerland did not have vent holes or badges on the toms until I think 1965. I have a floor tom shell with a date stamp of 1964 and it has no hole. Also, look at the top of the main page of this forum and you will see Vintage drum identification, Slingerland. Click that and there is a ton of info.

Here is a link to it

So again show us some pictures of the wrap, it might not be a big deal.

Here's the pictures of the bass and tom wraps. The bass drum is also 2 wraps. It looks like a smaller piece was put on then a larger piece. I was told by the owner that the wraps are original.

The shrinkage and bubbling in the wrap is common for the wrap on a lot of drum sets from that time in addition to Slingerland. (I had to replace the wrap on my 64' Slingerland kit for that very reason) The additional piece of wrap is also common and you can tell if the wrap is original by looking to see if the wrap is wrapped right into the shell. A lot of the bigger drum companies were making their own shells and would roll the wrap right into shell as it was being rolled. The badges on the toms were placed onto the shells without a vent hole at least into the 1970's so you would be correct on that.

I am going to go ahead and state the obvious here just on the off chance that you haven't noticed already. The kit is mix matched and has an RK bass drum is 1954 or earlier because it still has the beaver tail lugs on it and the floor tom and rack tom both have the teardrop lugs on them which didn't start until 1955. The date could be narrowed down by looking at the badges on the toms. It will make a good players kit with a little TLC. Good luck

Yes the bass drum wrap was staggered where one side will over lap and the other under lap. And is normally factory. Doh, CT Pro posted the same info sorry.... but yes what he said!!

Nice looking drums they'll be a fun one to fix up and play.
