Oddball,I, for one, can not figure out where you are seeing any separation (near the batter head?) you are referring to. Can you clarify? It appears that yes, the grain of the inner ply is horizontal with a vertical seem. We shall keep in mind that what we see here is only of the inner ply. We can not see the other plies. I expect that we will see more experienced experts chime in here, as we are all intrigued about this....all dying to know about this (I know I am most intrigued!). I have not seen many of these up close and do not recall reading much about the wood type or ply orientation of the early Pearls. John

I`ve been a carpenter all my life,..look through the batter head, look at the thickness of the line. You will notice that it goes from thin to thicker and actually looks to have been filled but too far to make that call. If I made that seam,..you would not even see it from that distance !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Gaetano, what does the wood type and grain direction look like with the rack and floor toms?

The wood grain is in the same direction as the BD in the rack and floor tom.

The grain goes horizontal with a vertical seam. I'll post pictures later tonight

I have seen a few pics of MIJ kits from that era that had a much nicer grade of Luan, most of them have been Pearl badged.

Never seen one with vertical Grain though.

Either way nice little kit there, for 80.00 you got a steal.

if it's a 22/13/16 set-up then I'd say it's the No.61 Deluxe outfit from the 68 catalog http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/my_collection/literature/pearl/1968-pearl-catalog-4.jpg

The wood grain does look interesting and no vent hole on the BD, but that may be normal for that year.

It is in fact a 22/13/16. What is it worth you think?

Cool. That IS a nice score. I'd hang onto that one myself, and give it the full VDF treatment, (treat insides, polish outsides - tons of great tips here). You plan to keep it or flip it? Would look sweet with a fresh reso head on the kick drum, and a nice vintage Pearl logo*, (shameless self promo). Should sound good too, with right heads and tuning.

I just ordered Evans g2 coated heads for the tom and floor tom. I also have a fairly old Ludwig Supraphonic snare that I'm gonna use with this kit. What is a vdf treatment? (I'm assuming its "Vintage Drum Forum" but what does this entail?

That is a great looking kit! With a little spit & polish, it'll be a stunner. I'd pay well over what you paid for that kit.

Yeah, you're new here, but you've come to the right place if you want to get the most out of your vintage drums. This forum is filled with info, and folks that are happy to answer questions. Take some time to check out the restoration section, and the non USA section, and do some searches and you'll find all sorts of useful tips on treating the inside of the shells, what products work best for cleaning and polishing wrap and chrome, where to find any missing parts, tuning, and on and on... If you're really into it, then this is the place to be.
