Ludwig 'standard' questions!!

Loading...

i just found this great kit on fleaby...

http://s175.photobucket.com/albums/w145/qunvat/

i wanted it for a beatles thang and didnt really have a grand + to throw at a full on superclassic, but found this for £550...(i'm a brit!)

it seems the kit, which is in amazing nick...was stored in a uni or college in the US or CANADA all its life and never gigged!!!

its a ludwig standard which i'm told is basically a 'cheaper' superclassic but much more rare?!?..

it has a code scratched on the chrome of all 4 drums...

BSD 27 - J Co 84 - 6012304

I # 20568 (date???)

interesting!

no stamps inside the drums...OR badges

i guess it a ludwig standard in blue strata (oyster?)

it really is like a new kit....any idea if that was a good price?.. though i dont intend to sell but use as a 4 piece (with a jazz festival if i can find one not too dear!)

ta all...si

Nice looking drums! The "Blue Strata" (the proper name for it) wrap color seems to be in very nice and bright condition.

The incised number on the tom mount could possibly be the date of the kit "February 5th, 1968" would certainly coincide with the Standard line. Plus, being that your kit has the original "Classic" (proper name) lugs with the Standard T-rods, indicates an earlier kit in the Standard series. They later changed to a smoother-style lug that was less labor intensive (= less costly to make) lug for that line.

But....my question is:

"Where are the badges?"

I love Ludwig Standards. One of my favorite sets is my brothers Lemon Strata 22" 16" 13" 12" 1970's Standard. I think that because of the killer finishes and the competitive sound of Ludwig Standards they are on the rise on the market. That finish is deadly. I would snag them.

Go here:

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_badges.html

scroll down to near the bottom and you will see what type of badges the Standards had. By the way, these Standard badges are not all that "in demand". It wouldn't likely be worth the trouble to find badges and then have them installed properly. Nevertheless, they are very nice looking drums.

Some strangeness...Ludwig standards with classic lugs...I've seen and heard of this before, so no real question there.

Are the tom mounts, tom holder on the bass and floor tom leg mounts correct for the standards?

Also, it's strange that the grommets are in place but the badges are gone.

Are those the correct T rods?

I'm not a Ludwig expert, but these things seem strange.

The standards ARE nice drums...same shells as the classics.

From Rich K.

Some strangeness...Ludwig standards with classic lugs...I've seen and heard of this before, so no real question there. Are the tom mounts, tom holder on the bass and floor tom leg mounts correct for the standards?Tom holder/bass drum mount = yes. Tom mounts = very likely. Some one has added a memory lock to the post (wise move -because they had the tendency to slip) The hex nuts have been replaced by the newer t-handles, obviously, but the mounts could have been Classics on an early Standard set. The fact that someone incised the date on the tom mounting plate is kind of ugly, but, oh well. If that is the date, then it would coincide with a very early Standard date...like maybe one of the very first kits made. If that's the case, then maybe Ludwig didn't have the badges to install(?) and made one with no badges. Those grommets Do indeed look clean and untouched. Also, it's strange that the grommets are in place but the badges are gone. That is unusual, but it is possible it is original to this set.Are those the correct T rods?Yes, they are Standard T-rods, but the claws are Classics.I'm not a Ludwig expert, but these things seem strange.Ludwig did some unusual things during transition periods or when introducing new linesThe standards ARE nice drums...same shells as the classics.

They sound exactly the same as Classics. The area the Standards really failed was the hi-hat pedal and bass drum pedals. They were reeeeeeally cheap. Ludwig made their own shells and so the equipment was already in place for that operation. They tried to cut costs in the area of hardware by making the Standard lugs a less labor-intensive shape to buff out and polish. The pedals were extremely simplistic and primitive -almost toy-like. But, interestingly, the flat-base cymbal stands were kinda cool! And the Strata wraps were some of the coolest of all Ludwig's wraps, in my opinion.

The very early 1968 date (indication) suggests, to me, a Standard kit that was possibly ordered -pre-badge -maybe Ludwig didn't have all the Standard hardware ready to go at that early date and sent a kit out with mostly Classic components(?)...or maybe even ordered without the badges(?) -some people considered them "ugly". The Classic components would not be considered out of the question for an early Standard kit.
