1960s ERA Vintage Pearl Kit ID HELP

Loading...

I just bought this kit today for $80. Not sure if I got a good deal or not. It's got red sparkle wraps and the gold script badge. According to Pearl history that badge was only made in the 60's.

it is late 60s with those badges. And how could it not be a good deal at $80? Very nice deal, good score.

I agree it`s a nice deal for $80. It looks well kept and will clean up real well, especially if you re-paint the black on the BD hoops, then you could get the $125 top price I would pay for it. It prolly has a number not name, but if I were to give it one,..I`d call it the Gene Krupa Wish I Were A Slingerland Wannabe Kit !!

Ya 80.00 is a great deal I think. I always look at like this (it makes me feel better), you got three drums and three stands for 80. Thats only about 13.00 for each peice. Good score!

Maybe it's just a trick of the lighting, but is that lateral wood grain inside that kick drum?

I thought the same thing when I viewed the picture. Lighting? Hmmmm.....

I also noticed that the wood inside the BD does not look like the cheap splintery luan. Maybe very early stencil kits used better quality wood for their plies? If this is true, I'll keep my eyes open for this type of drum. Can anyone validate?

The grain is horizontal and the seam has separated near the reso head. a diagonal seam would be more appropriate.

Oddball,

I, for one, can not figure out where you are seeing any separation (near the batter head?) you are referring to. Can you clarify?

It appears that yes, the grain of the inner ply is horizontal with a vertical seem. We shall keep in mind that what we see here is only of the inner ply. We can not see the other plies.

I expect that we will see more experienced experts chime in here, as we are all intrigued about this....all dying to know about this (I know I am most intrigued!). I have not seen many of these up close and do not recall reading much about the wood type or ply orientation of the early Pearls.

Gaetano, what does the wood type and grain direction look like with the rack and floor toms?
