1951 Olympic 1151W. (by Premier)

Hi Folks,

I picked this one up over the weekend and gave it a good cleaning.

We're looking at a 1951 olympic model 1151W. (W for white)

This one is the 5.5" version with a white lacquer over brass shell.

This particular model was manufactured in the early 1950's in the Premier factories and was available in 5.5" or 6.5" depth and the choice of finish was black or white.

It has 8 "deco" lugs and gorgeous die cast hoops. ( notice the different pattern between top and bottom hoop)

The snares are the original "NEW ERA 16 strand".

Odd is the orientation of the badge. It should be turned 90° counter clockwise but isn't because of the centre bead.

Olympic is considered to be Premier's entry range,… I can't find a lot of "entry" on this fine snare,…

Hope you like it.

Olympic was not really entry level, just a different market at the time.

Excellent find!

Thanks, indeed a great find,...

Quality wise, for sure Olympic in the 1950's was NOT entry level but the way the brand presented itself was,...

In all the brochures terms like: "world's biggest value", "world's lowest priced" and "Olympic value for money" seem to appear an awful lot.

Some more intresting reading here,... http://www.vintageolympic.co.uk/drummers.html

From going through the bochures, I've learned now that my drum is dated probably 1953. In 1951, Olympic offered a 5" and 6.5" model, in the 1953 brochure, the 5" disappeared and became a 5.5" depth.

I think that is true for the early postwar era. What Premier seemed to be doing was, using up older Premier parts, stock and designs on Olympic drums, when they had re-styled and modernized, Premier drums. This drum has the hoops and lugs that were on the Dominion Ace in 1937-----and likely has the same shell-----just not chromed. This is essentially a single snare Dominion Ace. Premier drums had been totally redesigned by the time this was made. The 1951 catalogue shows the Premier No. 2 snare drum (14 x 6) with the curved feminine waisted lugs and rounded ears on the diecast hoops that most people associate with Premier.

As time went on Olympic did become more entry level. You can find the very same snare shell(not this one---a wooden shell) in the same wrap and same badge from the 1950's -----first with 8 lugs, a muffler and diecast hoops------essentially a Premier and a very short time later; with 6 lugs, stamped hoops and no muffler but in all other ways the same drum.

You are correct calfskin.

I found this picture on the web,...

Except the badge and strainer mechanism, the same drum.

So basically what the Olympic buyers got in the post war period was discontinued, slightly modified Premier stuff.

Cool snare, Stef! After I send you the Slingy, you should take a pic of your entire collection. How many snares are you up to now?

Thanks Aaron,... can't wait to play that Hollywood Ace and thanks again for receiving that one for me.

I'm up to 14 snares now, nowhere near to some other collections I saw here.

I will send you a picture.
