Restoring 80's Yamaha kit

Loading...

Hi there. I've just joined this forum. What a mine of useful information!

I'm a big fan of Yamaha drums and own a recording custom kit and a hipgig.

Just bought a 1980's 8000 series kit in Cobalt blue lacquer and thinking seriously about restoring it.

Does anyone know what the finish on these drums is? Is it a polyurethane base coat followed by a polurethane lacquer? Or will it be the nitro lacquer that is used on guitars?

Also - is there a source of the fittings etc? Some bits of chrome are pitted although most is OK....

Many thanks!

I need some touch up paint for my hoops too...would love to know if anyone has found a match.

I love those kits....I played one throughout the late 80's and early 90's all around Boston, and never saw another one like it. I bought mine after seeing Anton Fig with that color on Letterman around 86.

I just bought this set over the summer off craigslist and was psyched to find traditional size toms:

Holy crud! That tom mount system looks like it could hold up an elephant. Cool color kit.

Good luck. Please post when you finish work on them. Love that finish. Omar Hakim played a kit similar or exactly like them in the Sting movie Bring on the Night. Yamaha came out this year with the retro colors but this one wasn't one of them. They have a different blue which is also striking but this cobalt color is one of my favorites. Have fun. I bet they sound amazing. I have an RC kit but mine is the cherry wood finish which is beautiful as well.

Congratulations on a great kit! I love mine!

I have been trying for years to find any paint code that even MIGHT be the right color, with no luck. I even have a mile-long Yamaha motorcycle paint color code list and I saw nothing on there that I am confident with (and I was not willing to spend~$50/pint to try any I thought might be right).

I had to do the paint on the shell Montineri did for me because he had the same problem... I went with PPG "French Banner Blue" based on the chip compared to my 8" tom out in the sun and then tweaked it from there. If I remember right, I used a bit of green in it, possibly some black and or white as well to bring it in as close as possible. Although not perfect, behind the other drums, it is a good match. Note this color does shift with age, so fresh paint will not match old paint, and doing an 'eye match' is probably the best way to get it for chips on shells you don't want to completely refinish.

As to the hoops, I actually had to get a new hoop immediately- the drums came in with one hoop with massive chipping. Finding chip-free hoops for an RC kit is near impossible (unless they changed the finish on later kits? My drums span from 1980-1989 production), and I assume yours are the same era with the same problem. Since you like black heads on your bass, I suggest a pair of black hoops from Gibraltar and moth ball the blue ones.

This is now a very rare color (although it does pop up from time to time), and as mentioned is was not re-issued like the hot red and yellow. Non-power depth RC drums in this color are very desirable to collectors.

PLEASE if you do somehow manage to find any correct paint code in any paint line, let me know!

Best of luck with the project!
