Ludwig Black Panther

Recently I was fortunate enough to pick up a 22/12/13/16 Black Panther kit with an Acro from the original owner. The kit hadn't been played in years and certainly needs a "good bath" and some TLC. However, structually it's extremely sound. It doesn't look like the heads have ever been removed, based on the looks (and smell) of the interior shells.

After removing all the dust, dirt and grime from the wrap I'm planning on "treating it" with the correct product and/or process. However, I'm not exactly sure what that might be. I read in another post that one of the products that was recommended was Armor-All. Is this "THE" product to use on this particular wrap or is there something better?

Any and all words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

THANKS in advance for your time and your help!Clapping Happy2

Armor All is perfect. Black Panther is the same material used on car tops. Ergo, an 'auto' detailing product with a good track record would be just what the doctor ordered.

Enjoy your kit! Photos after you detail it, please.

Too many great drums to list here!

Thanks for the input, John! I appreciate it. I'll definitely get up some pics once I get the kit cleaned up some.

BTW.......I've still got that Slingy rack tom that I'd love to turn into a "black/gold duco" to match my Slingy bass & snare drums. You wouldn't happen to know anyone who might do such work, would you?LoLoLoLo

there seems to be a bit of a split in the car enthusiast world as to whether Armor-all is good for plastics. I'd be inclined to research a bit more before using it.

Oldschool - It's not that I don't want to do it for you, I'd be happy to help. As I told you privately, I'm just not in a position to replace the drum if it doesn't come out perfect, or if something goes wrong. I'm pretty confident in my own ability, but if I screw up one of my own drums, it's no biggie. If I screw up somebody else's... then it is a biggie. I just don't want to take any risks with someone else's property. That's all it is, nothing personal.

You're a good guy, I like you and I would love to help out. Just don't want to mess up on -your- drum. Hope you understand.

I have been told that this product is vastly superior to Armor-All. Have yet to try it, as my Black Panthers are already in great condition.

Armor-all is seen as bad in some car circles because it can actually dry out the plastics when exposed to direct sunlight.

Now with that said, I've been using Armor-all on my own Black Panther kits for decades with no issues. Think about this for a second. When was the last time you had that kit out in DIRECT sunlight? If it's going to be gigged with, that most likely will be at night most of the time, and if it's only going to be in your drum room, chances are you won't have them by a window anyway. I say go ahead with the Armor-all, you shouldn't have any issues. I haven't and neither did my father with his Panthers (one kit is actually one and the same as I inherited it) using Armor-all on the finish.

I fully understand and respect your position, John. I was just having a little fun with you. I've seen your work and it's top notch. I only wish that I had that type of talent! I happened to find a Slingy black/gold duco kit at the local Music-Go-Round but they want $1,599.00 for the kit. That type of pricing is way over my limited budget plus, even if I had the funds, I wouldn't pay that much for them. I've already got the bass and the snare so all I need are the rack and floor toms.

Thanks for the positive feedback, BTW!

Another question, if I may: I'm going to be touching up the bass drum hoops on this kit. From what I can see with my one good eye, the original black paint on the hoops of the black panther kits appears to be a "black satin." Am I correct?
