I'm stumped on this one - help please

I bought this a few months ago and still no luck tracking down what brand it is.

It has calfhind heads my have come with the drum when new.

The wood appears to be Asian Mahogany - the shell is thin and flexible. I removed the tom holder and didn't put it back on. It would probably tear away from the shell with normal to heavy play. It looks like it's an after factory install - don't know for sure though. The lugs are hinged.

It does not look like a high quality wrap but it is very sparkley - intense reflection there.

Maybe it was a marching drum? There are no spur holes. I'm guessing 1950's or before?....only because of the Calfhide heads.

Sorry for the double post (earlier posted on the Vintage Drum site) - maybe better luck posting it here -thanks

There was another drum posted , within the last year, that had similarities to this one. I recall that the grommet was identical to this one. ---I will try to find it . ----do not remember what the outcome of that one was, or is this the same one?

Have you considered the possibility that it is home made? Those don't exactly look like drum lugs. They more resemble some multi-angled cleat or foot that could connect to a turnbuckle or something . That long hex section looks like it is meant to be held with a wrench, while something else is tightened into it----guide wire or cable?

Thanks - yes - it's pretty much likely the drum was homemade. The lugs look like/are hex bolts.

It was in fact me that posted this drum last year sometime.

The drum is pretty old I think. It would be nice if I could date it somehow.

The calfhide is decades old from what I can tell. They look and feel like some of the 40's and 50's bass drum hides I've retucked.....and tried to retuck. I'm no expert by a long shot - just going by what I've seen. This is how rumours and drum lore start hu....

"it's a 1949 sparkle bass drum with those real cool turnbuckle lugs"

I don't know when that type of thin philippine luan(?) plywood was first exported . ---probably in the 1950's . You might be able to get an earliest limit on that part of it at least and work forward from there. There is probably a plywood or lumber marketing association that might have details on that.It would have been a pretty big event in the plywood trade because it would have shoved fir and poplar and knotty pine aside.

I remember , about 1960, that knotty pine became fashionable as wall panelling. Prime pine lumber needed to be knot free but as cutting into smaller ,younger "limbey" wood proceeded, due to scarcity, the problem of how to market the lousey knotty wood( except for pulp) loomed. They created a cachet for "knotty pine panelling", in order to use up the junk wood. It became really big, because unlike clear pine, it had some character and then rose in price because it was 'in"--------it's place in the budget market for wall panelling was taken by Philippine Mahogany which became the connoisseur's choice for basement stairwells, for about a decade.

going back to the drum. it is a pretty clever construction------a lot of time and thought , went into it-------maybe a shop project?

no idea why that came up as the link. i tried it again and it came up again. the actual link was for your original post in vintage drums about this drum and the other bass drum that resembles it. seems to be from the same production.
