Paiste Formula 602 - Info Please

Loading...

I have a Paiste Formula 602 vintage hi hat top that I got as part of a larger purchase. Can anyone tell me more about what I've got here? I've attached a pic of the stamp. From what I can tell, some people really like these and they can be worth a few bucks. I know that as an orphan hat, not so much, but I'd still like to know more about it / them. Any info would be great.

No, it doesn't have a serial because it's a "pre-serial" 602. Made in the 60's. Paiste didn't start using serial numbers until the mid 70'S.

I'm smart......and I've sold a few and still have a few. I have a Pre-Serial 18 inch crash and 20 inch ride that still glisten like they were new.

I'm just curious how you identified this before the OP posted about the serial number.

The stamp. The pre-serials are different. Different to the black label series and they changed a couple of times in the 80's and 90's

I bought Paiste Formula 602's with my WMP Downbeat kit when I ordered it on 4/4/67. Receipt: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30559980@N07/6925762290/in/set-72157629432619022

Included were the following:

14" HH's: 840g top (extra light) & 920g bottom (light)

16" Crash: 1060g (extra light)

18" Medium: 1560g +/- (medium light)

The gram measurements came from a kitchen scale that reads in both ounces & grams. I may take them to FedEx for a more accurate reading before the whole set goes on the block this fall (I just finished the last of the complete tear-down & detailing last weekend).

Your embossed logo matches my pre-serial logos (attached) exactly. Serial numbers were added in about 1973 so yours are at least pre-1973.

There were cheaper cymbals available when I bought these but I really didn't give it much thought. As an 8th grader going into hock to my parents for the first time I didn't know too much but I'm glad I didn't cheap out now. My drum teacher and dealer was a jazz musician and this is what he played so I did, too. They sound really awesome, but then, I've never played anything else.
