Deri snaredrum reassembly

Loading...

Deri drums go back a long way(1930's). This one likely dates from the 50's.

The drum came to me for very little but aside from a good cleaning and a bit of lubrication, it needs very little. The badge is painted on the wrap.It will need some touching up too. The birch shell is super light, weighing only 500gm.,with the wrap on. The hoops by comparison, which are of very thick rolled stock, weigh almost 700gm.each. They are unique, with a heavy outward facing bead at the top. All of the parts are precise and well made-----lugs are cast aluminum with spring loaded brass inserts. The throwoff, which at first looks dinky, is a cast block with a brass bellcrank, covered by a chrome shroud. It seems pretty impermeable to damage. The adjuster is on the butt end which is a simple yoke and threaded shaft. Here's a look at the parts. It will be together sometime tonight.

Here is the almost finished drum. I have decided to make a small modification before I put the wires on. This is a 14 x 4 drum. The throwoff extends past the skirt of the hoop when let all the way down. It wouldn't do that on a 5" drum. As this one sits, the snare cord is put under a lot of stress wrapping around the hoop to get through the gate.------ however,if I drill a couple of small holes in the horizontal part of the hoop, the snare cord can drop straight down, through the holes and gently around the bend and through the gate. The slide rail in the throwoff is quite small and can easily slip in and out of the deep hoop skirt without touching anything.

But, here is the drum. Deri seems to have had an intent to put out a design ethic of roundness. The lugs, of all the teardrop lugs around are the most teardrop----without an angle anywhere, except perhaps at the tip. The snare adjuster, at the butt end,is round, the yoke through which the snare cord passes is round, the out facing lip of the hoop is round and the t- screws have built in round bushings below the heads that seat into the round ears, directing the rods into the lugs at at an angle. It is surprising, they didn't build a ball shaped throwoff.

The company seems to have put it's effort into what counted most. The bearing edges are immaculate, peaking perfectly along the polished lengthwise grain of the middle ply. The snare bed is gentle and smooth. The hardware attached to the drum is thick, with a low resonant frequency-----less likely to produce competing overtones with such a thin high pitched shell. This was a middle of the range drum too(they did make some 8 lug parallel strainer drums).

don't suppose you would have any interest in a Deri snaredrum in red perloid , would you?

it's not in as good nick as this one but it is all there.----i think it has the same hoops and lugs as yours too. your kit postdates this blue sparkle snare by a bit. they went to the more flattened teardrop lugs, slot t-screws and lighter rolled hoops with an incurve at the lip by then. anyway; p.m. me about it. I'm sure we can work something out .
