Refinishing 80's Superstars

Hello all,

I have a question related to judgment and tastes. I have a 1983 Cherry Wine Superstar kit in decent shape. I've been thinking of getting them stripped and having a natural lacquer applied. I think the world still has enough of these drums in this finish, so morally speaking, is this wrong?

Now on the technical side (from someone who doesn't know about these things) is it possible and practical to have this done? The interior of the drum is also red, so preferably I'd have that stripped too if possible. Thanks.

Morally, ethically, artistically, spiritually, fiscally, and musically ... icky.

I have the same drums in the same color. They WERE concert toms-but no more. But that was as far as I took the project. The nicks and dents are part of the set.I was able to fill in some of the gouges with furniture fill stick.I hear that finish is very ,very difficult to strip/remove.I will say these are among the top 2 sets I've owned as far as tone is concerned, and is #1 for staying IN tune.Tama's build quality was outstanding-

They're your drums, do what you like to them.

1979/83 Tama Superstar Frankenkit
Modern Ludwig Black Beauty

If you do this, be prepared for a ton of work. It is very hard to remove existing stains and lacquers good enough to use a natural clear finish. You might not get 100% of the stain or dye removed from the wood. Then if you do get the shells stripped and sanded good enough you will never have the quality finish that was done by the factory, unless you take them to an experienced professional finisher. Not a job for the do it yourselfer.

Thanks everyone. After reading the comments and realizing I'm insane, I will keep them as-is. One day I'll just buy a kit with a natural finish.

Ya good call, unless the drums are just beat up so bad you cant look at them then leave them alone.
