Calfskin, It seems you post your distorted, shrunken view of Japanese business history a couple of times a year whenever the opportunity presents itself. Entering a market at a certain price point, for beginner level instruments, does not mean one is dedicated to low quality products, fooling the public, or foistering a fraud.

Someone asked a question and I simply answered it. Read what I actually said, instead of interpreting it incorrectly. I will repeat in a different way.

The developing Japanese economy ,after the U.S. occupation ended desperately needed cash. Japan's domestic market was limited to uniquely Japanese goods + a small amount of demand for what the populace had seen during the occupation. They had to export but there was no demand in the west(mainly America) for anything they traditionally produced.Things, Japanese were treated with much suspicion. The Japanese did not underestimate the consumer greed in the west, so they gravitated to producing cheap copies of known western products along with, bubblegum machine trinkets, tools made out of white metal ,plastic geraniums for window boxes, hallowe'en masks, funny little cars that rusted out in 5 years and 2 stroke motorcycles that needed a ring job every 1000 miles, amongst other things. You know what, though; North Americans loved it , because it was cheap . Germany wasn't allowed to have patents after the war ,so they copied every German camera, microscope, binocular or telescope they could get their hands on. They toyed with Rotary engines, copying the revolutionary ,Wankel and to the point of this thread, they copied dozens upon dozens of original western musical instrument designs. The reason they gravitated towards, Slingerland was because ,Slingerland could have cared less. There was no lawsuit there.

Now ,if you were a company that had begun by assembling low grade copies of another company's goods and sold them under 50 different names, primarily through second rate retail outlets and then progressed to in house development , with original designs and a world class reputation, why would you want to keep records of and fawn over a period in time when things were desperate and the intent was to sell as many units of clearly substandard product, as possible , at a paltry profit margin, to wanking American teenagers? I hope ,they do find records because it will tell the story much the way I have painted it.

I quoted you, but I'm speaking to many. You are not the only person who is lacking understanding of world history and foreign business. This is just reflective of what many "believe" they understand due to geographical societal experiences. It's not your fault ... there is no fault here. It's just an honest lack of deep education on global economic and foreign history and the like. No one likes to be called ignorant on any topic, much less several topics as deep as these run, so I understand if you are put off. But please, take a moment to consider, I have no beef with any of you (well, there are a couple ;) ). I don't even know you. It is historical truth that was asked for and this site is devoted to. That's gotta come before pride.

Maybe the members could start by answering just the one direct question the OP asked ... Where in Japan is the Tama manufacturing plant?

That might kick this off to a more productive and fun topic.

What say we do some research and help the guy out. Put away our bias and focus on history for a bit. Cool?

May 22, 2008 the company celebrated 100 years of musical instrument manufacturing with a party that was held at the club Zepp Nagoya. The very limited Westernized History will sometimes eclipse the truth. This company has a much deeper and richer history than one centered around greed and piggybacking during a very small window of historical time (i.e. the 60s). If we put aside our bias and instead seek out the truth, this site will then become a much richer and purer depository of drumming history.

Salty,...You may wanna check with music stores that have been around since the sixties and seventies,...they are still around. Jacks Drum Shop in (Plymouth Ma.??) is one I know of. They used to be on Boylstion St Boston forever, near Berklee, they had to downsize but these type of stores may have purchase orders or account receipts for payment. Most companies puit information on these receipts or orders. Things like names adresses and phone numbers are often on them.

Just a different approach than the net. !! Any clue is a clue,...Right ?

RogerSling,

Stencil companies are just that, weather former or current, they got labeled that and it will stick to their reputation !! It`s part of that deccission that was made and tatooed on their products !! To defend and try and make that reputation dissappear or nullified,..is moot,..they`re stuck with it, just like Trixon and friends are Sonor copycats, and that aint going away either !!

Yes. of course. Companies can flaunt their humble beginnings and supply vague milestones in their rise to success but it doesn't change the fact that until they scarfed enough money out of the burgeoning 60's and 70's music industry to begin to make legitimate instruments, they along with Pearl were the percussion mfg. equivalent of a puppy mill. One of the questions also, was regarding the limited records and there is a legitimate reason for why they are scarce. Do you think Walmart keeps framed archival fashion designer renderings of their greeter's smocks?

Didn't defend. Won't defend. It ain't personal.

It's just that there is more to drumming history than "these are stencil kits, Asian firewood" ... to quote the general like minded masses.

This is a drumming history site. The more we get out of the way of truth, the clearer the picture we have.

If all you have to add to the voice of historical truth is American bias, it may be best for all concerned that you still your voice for the good of the site and allow for the whole deep truth to emerge. This isn't directed to you as a personal dig ... it's directed to any individual that refuses to see the entire picture and makes it a point to obscure that which cannot be.

This thread is seeking the honest pure truth of the Star drums. I don't see where the negative bias is helping find that truth. How we feel about a drum has absolutely NO bearing on historical accuracy and truth.
