I'm not familar with the drummer so I can't comment on him or his tats. For the kit, this would appeal to Metalheads or 13 yo's (samething) or possibly a collector, not for the working drummer. I'd be embarassed bringing this kit into any of my gigs. To each his own. But if the owner of the club or the Brides parents see that kit, your butt is out the door.
To me that Tatoo kit would be a personalized kit, not a general public thing. Just how many sales does Ludwig see this kit bringing in? I mean, it's only a wrap!
But then why not take the idea one step further and make semi custom wraps available? A bunch of special wraps ONLY available at Ludwig. Not a fully custom thing as that get's too involved, but a bunch of well though out wraps that are not available anywhere else. Maybe change them out once a year for a whole new line of semi custom wraps and each type of wrap would most likely not have too many kits made from it making them potential collectibles right off the bat. It would certainly build a niche that other companies have not explored (exploited).
I don't see any manufacturing issues, it's the same Ludwig drums already on the assembly lines, same hardware and features, just with a different semi custom wrap. Personalized, yet it doesn't interrupt the flow of the assembly line which would increase the manufacturing costs.
The only problem I see with it is that Ludwig probably doesn't MAKE it's own wraps putting them at the mercy of the "special order" pricing if they were to order a small quantity of these "semi custom" wraps. It would of course make the kits more expensive, but again, it's only a wrap, how much more could it REALLY be??
