Dynasonic value?

Loading...

I have to come up with an insurance value on my Dynasonic -- what do you think the replacement cost would be?

It's a 5x14 COB with the clockface strainer and bread-and-butter lugs. #2117. The original snare rail was lost, so I had to replace it with a new replica until I can find the right one. Shell has some light scratching, but it's in good shape. Some very mild denting adjacent to the strainer and two of the lugs, but nothing serious. Any advice?

The Rogers players must all be out playing gigs on their sweet Rogers kits. The Band

I'm thinking $900-$1000 for an early COB Dyna-Sonic, 7 line, 2 bead shell, with the early clock face strainer.. in good shape.

Rob Cook, "The Rogers Book" page 186-187... gives great info on these drums.

*** follow up***

Wow $10.. that is one of the finds everybody keeps hoping for.. yeah that was a GOOD day! Let me echo Kevin's congrats!!

I'm pretty new to vintage gear (except my own brain) and drumming in general... enjoyed it as a kid, got away from it for 40 years, and now I'm back to enjoying it.

Thanks a lot, Jim. I guess I'll just insure it for $1k and call it a day. I picked it up a few months ago at a yard sale for $10. No joke. I'm going to go ahead and call that a good day. I don't really have any intention of selling it, though -- I'll probably play it some and just hold on to it. I'm only 25, but I'll end up considering that drum the turning point in my collection. I have a few nice modern drums (Legend, Wells, and a no-name custom), but this was my first vintage drum. I also acquired a 1935 Leedy parade drum recently, so I hope to build a nice collection before too long. Thanks for your help!

Hi mhbehr,

I'm only 25 as well. I have been into the vintage stuff for 6 or 7 years now. I just got my first vintage gear summer of '07. A fore-warning to you...it gets addictive real quick, haha.

It starts with finding every detail imaginable about your particular piece (value, who played it, other finishes, etc.). From there, you just start to get a little obsessive, haha. Ebay stalking, Craigslist surfing, also local goodwill and thrift store patronage.

If you want to keep this from happening, just mail me your new drum and pretend that you never were even at the yard sale!

Congrats on the find!

For insurance purposes I was thinking more along the lines of what money it would take to go out and purchase a vintage Rogers replacement drum of the type described.. not necessarily the condition described.

That might well be the wrong approach and value.. but it felt safe.

Thanks for the follow-ups, guys. You're right, there are a hairline cracks on a few of the lugs. I've already looked at the repros, and may swap them out. I'll also ease off the heads a bit. I don't crank mine to terribly far, but probably still tighter than the old guys. I'm just planning to hang on to the drum for fun -- I play most of my gigs with a 3x13 Wells (custom shop in Canada), and occasionally with an unsigned 5x14 maple.

Beats my story. I was at a music store when a kid came in looking to sell an old kit. The store didn't buy used stuff, so I followed him outside to take a look. Some piece of junk set, but he had a 60's 8" Dynasonic. Looked kinda beat up, but chrome polish had it looking really good after I gave the all the $ I had on me, $40.
