re-wrapping tonight & need some advice

Loading...

I ordered some precut wrap from jammin sam. I am having the worst time trying to get it on straight. I have been doing a bunch of dry runs to see how it will fit and each one has been unsuccessful. Anyone have a good method to get the wrap on right. By the way I m gluing. Thanks!

Also, when I take my time to line it up it fits perfectly. I obviously will not be able to do this once the glue is on. Thanks in advance!

This is not easy to do. But I have done it many times. You will need a whole bunch of spring clamps. You can buy these in a pack. Then put the drum down on a flat surface and let the wrap fall to that surface. Don't worry that it's not centered. Concentrate on getting it in the correct position as far as the wrap end finishing under lugs. Then lift away the end and mark the beginning with pencil. This is your start line. Then move to the vertical and use the mark as a start. Clamp this when you are happy. Then clamp again about 6" away. Remove the first clamps. Now dry wrap the drum and if it's off at the end, just pull a bit on the desired side and try again. You will have to do this many times. Eventually it will sit correctly. Now look at the pictures. You need to check everything a few times. Then using the tape, clamp the beginning again and then carefully lay the wrap flat and put on the glue. If you are careful with this method it works, but as I said - it's not easy. The alternative is to have not used precut and then trim the wrap. Easier but you need the tools.

Here is the first tom I have ever personally wrapped. I think it came out pretty good for my first shot.

You can also put wax paper on the glue/wrap and peel it back as you go...

Of course I would not go without saying thanks! I posted those pictures at 2AM, and I was going to post a final thank you when I was done with all the shells. You guys are a wealth of info and I could not have made it through my first project without all of your help. It is greatly appreciated! I am not a person that forgets about recognition. Thanks again!

I have never wrapped a drum but I plan on it when I find a piece of RTP wrap. Anyways, I have an idea for a jig I will use when I finally do this:

Piece of plywood laying flat.

2- 2x4's clamped parallell to each other 1/32" larger than the width of the drum I am wrapping. These 2x4's are clamped to the plywood.

I will use metal stripping from work, and usee the 2/4's to hold two pieces of this metal stripping down, perfectly where I wish the wrap to be on the drum. The stripping will be a bit thinner than the wrap, and will be inside of the 2/4's to create a seperate, tad-bit smaller, channel for the wrap to lay in.

Dry wrap the drum to fit for perfect length.

Once the length is good, lay the wrap inside the two pieces of material half the thickness of the wrap, apply glue and roll the shell right over the jig.

Anyways, this is pretty much how I plan on wrapping my snare when I get the red tiger pearl wrap someday!

I haven't done a lot of re-wraps (well, actually only one), but I found the spring clamps to be the solution to getting it straight. I used a method basically the same as Troutstudio, a few more clamps around the drum removing them as I worked my way around...came out great.
